Shifting homes in Goa
Goa is small, yet a move can change completely from one taluka to the next. Panaji, the capital, has Portuguese-era houses in Fontainhas and on Altinho, and apartment blocks in Campal, Miramar, Caranzalem, Dona Paula and Taleigao. Porvorim, across the Mandovi, is the newer residential side, with the Assembly, the Secretariat and gated complexes on both sides of the highway. Mapusa is the market town of the north, and the belt from Candolim and Calangute to Anjuna, Assagao and Siolim is thick with villas, cottages and rented rooms.
A heritage house in Fontainhas or an old family home in Assagao holds carved rosewood beds, the family oratory, heavy chests and chandeliers, while the lane outside may barely fit a car. A flat in Porvorim or Dona Paula is plain work, with a lift and a society to deal with. Beach belt villas are often let furnished, so a tenant's load is small, but an owner fitting out a new villa needs furniture brought in stages. Vasco has navy, port and shipyard housing, and Ponda has older homes among its temple villages.
Government, tourism, industry and the port bring people here. The Assembly and Secretariat sit in Porvorim, tourism jobs fill the beach belt, pharmaceutical and other plants run in the industrial estates at Kundaim and Pilerne, and Vasco has the Mormugao port, Goa Shipyard and the navy. Many Goans work in the Gulf, on ships or in Britain, and others leave for Mumbai or Bangalore. Buyers from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore furnish villas they visit a few times a year.

Packers and movers charges in Goa
Distances are short and the roads slow. Panaji to Porvorim is about 6 km, to Mapusa about 13 km, to Vasco about 30 km over the Zuari bridge, and to Ponda around 30 km, and each of these fits in one day. What stretches the day is bridge traffic on the Mandovi and the Zuari, jams in the beach belt, the tight lanes of Fontainhas and the Mapusa market, and, from June, the rain.

Areas we cover in Goa
A landmark is often more use to us than an address, because it tells us the approach.
Fontainhas and Altinho
Panaji's old Latin quarter and the hill above it, with narrow lanes, steps and one-way streets. A pickup brings goods to the nearest wide road, and heavy pieces come down by hand.
Porvorim
Flats and gated complexes along the highway near the Assembly. Traffic at the O Coqueiro and Damian de Goa junctions decides when the truck can turn in.
Mapusa
The north's market town, packed on Fridays for the weekly bazaar. Old houses in the centre stand on narrow lanes, so loading starts early and never on a Friday.
Candolim, Calangute, Assagao and Siolim
Villas and cottages behind laterite walls, on narrow roads jammed with tourist traffic from November to February. A smaller vehicle covers the last stretch.
Vasco da Gama
Port, shipyard and navy housing around Headland Sada, Baina and the airport. Defence areas need gate passes, and port traffic fills the roads at shift times.
Ponda
The central taluka, with older family homes in temple villages such as Priol and Kavlem and the Kundaim estate close by. Temple feasts shut village roads for a day.

Society and building rules
Co-operative societies in Panaji, Porvorim and Dona Paula ask for notice to the secretary, a clean maintenance record and a daylight move, and some want a tenant to produce the owner's letter. The gated complexes book the service lift for a slot and may hold a deposit. Heritage houses need no permission, but neighbours in Fontainhas share a narrow lane and should know the day. Navy and port housing in Vasco has its own vacating drill and gate passes. Villa owners who live elsewhere should tell the caretaker in writing what may leave.

Where the truck can stand
A 17 ft truck is at home on the highways and the main roads, and out of place on much of the rest. Fontainhas and Altinho have narrow lanes and steps, the Mapusa market is packed, and village roads in the beach belt run between laterite walls lined with parked scooters. A 14 ft truck or a pickup does most of the work, with the bigger vehicle waiting where the road widens. Near the beaches, soft sand is one more limit on where a loaded truck can go.

Traffic and timing
Traffic is at its worst while the tourists are in, from November to February, above all around Christmas and New Year, when the beach belt jams and Panaji fills. IFFI in late November brings crowds to Campal. The feast of St Francis Xavier on 3 December draws huge crowds to Old Goa. Carnival and Shigmo parades close Panaji's main roads for an afternoon, and Mapusa's Friday market fills that town. The monsoon months, wet as they are, have the lightest traffic of the year.

Weather and the months to plan around
The monsoon reaches the coast in early June and lasts until late September, bringing strong wind, days of steady rain and rivers running high. Damp air is a fact of life here in every season, and mould finds any wood or leather left sealed in a carton for long. Summer, in April and May, is humid and around 33°C. November to February is dry and comfortable, which is also why the roads are busiest then, so late October or early March is often the best compromise.

Goans leave for work in Mumbai, Bangalore, the Gulf and further afield, and people arrive for government jobs, tourism, industry and retirement. Belgaum and Hubli are close for families from Karnataka, and Margao, the south's big town, is 35 km away.

Can you move furniture out of an old house in Fontainhas?
Yes. Those lanes are too tight for any lorry, so ours stands on a wider road towards the Mandovi and a pickup runs goods out. Carved beds and cabinets are wrapped in soft layers and corrugated sheet, and the family oratory is packed with its pieces kept together. The survey checks the stairs and doorways, and a wooden crate for a fragile piece is charged extra.
I am posted out of the navy base at Vasco. Can you handle the gate and the paperwork?
Yes. Send us the base's rules for the vehicle and crew, usually needed several days ahead, and the date your quarters go back. We finish packing and loading before the quarters are inspected. The GST invoice lists each item, ready for your claim, and a car or bike travels by carrier to the new station on its own.
Is it better to move in the tourist season or during the monsoon?
The weather is best from November to February, but so is the traffic, and the beach belt can take hours to cross. The monsoon brings clear roads and heavy rain. If you can choose, late October or early March is a good middle ground. Whatever the month, a weekday start early in the morning makes the day easier.
We are furnishing a villa in Assagao. Can you bring the furniture in stages?
Yes. Every trip gets its own line in the quote, so pieces can arrive as each room is finished. Assagao's lanes are narrow and walled, so the truck may stop short and the crew carries in. Someone should be at the villa for each delivery to check the pieces and say where each one goes.
