Shifting homes across Karnataka
Bengaluru holds a large share of Karnataka's jobs and an even larger share of its house moves. IT parks along the Outer Ring Road, in Whitefield and at Electronic City, aerospace and defence units such as HAL and BEL, and a crowded startup scene bring people from every state, and many of them change flats every couple of years. Mysuru, about 145 km away, draws retired families and staff of the IT campuses there, and Tumakuru is growing as an industrial town on the Bengaluru side.
Outside Bengaluru the state falls into distinct parts. The coast, from Mangaluru and Udupi up to Karwar, has the port, the refinery, fishing towns and big medical and engineering colleges in Manipal and Mangaluru. The Malnad hills behind it, around Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu, are coffee and forest country with scattered houses. The north, around Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, Vijayapura and Kalaburagi, is flat, hot and dry. Hubballi is the zonal railway headquarters, and Belagavi is an army town with a large regimental centre.
People leaving Karnataka tend to go to Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and the NCR for work, while the north Karnataka towns send students and young engineers to Bengaluru and welcome retirees back. Government, bank and railway transfers move families between district towns every year, often timed for the start of the school term in June. The coastal districts have long ties with Mumbai and the Gulf, and moves between Mangaluru and Mumbai are part of family life for many.

Homes and buildings
Bengaluru is apartment complexes run by associations, from mid-rise blocks in Koramangala and HSR Layout to large gated projects on Sarjapur Road, in Whitefield and around Hebbal, alongside older independent houses in Jayanagar, Basavanagudi and Malleswaram. A lot of rented homes are upper portions of an owner's house, reached by a narrow outside staircase. Mysuru and the district towns are mostly independent houses on plotted layouts. Mangaluru mixes apartment blocks with tiled-roof houses on sloping plots, Belagavi has cantonment bungalows, and Hubballi has large railway colonies.

Between cities
NH 48 runs the length of the state from Bengaluru through Tumakuru, Chitradurga, Davanagere and Hubballi-Dharwad to Belagavi, and it is four or six lanes most of the way. The expressway to Mysuru has cut that drive to around two hours. The coast is the hard part. Trucks to Mangaluru usually go down the Shiradi ghat on NH 75, which is slow, has been shut for repairs in past years and is prone to landslides in the monsoon, with the Charmadi and Sampaje ghats as the alternatives. In the north, the roads between Vijayapura, Kalaburagi and the rest of the state are long stretches through dry farmland.

Moving into or out of Karnataka
Karnataka needs no special permit for household goods coming in. Personal effects are not a sale, so the load travels with an itemised list and a declaration that the goods are your own used belongings. E-way bills apply to goods in trade, and a household of used things is not trade, so one is not normally needed. Cars are where people get caught out. Bengaluru's transport officials do check vehicles on other states' plates, and a car kept here beyond 12 months has to be re-registered in Karnataka, with road tax paid here and an NOC from the RTO that first registered it. Staff who qualify for a BH series plate are spared that step.

Weather and the months to plan around
Bengaluru's temperatures stay moderate through the year, so rain is the thing to watch. Pre-monsoon storms in April and May bring down trees and flood underpasses, and September and October are often the wettest months, when areas near the lakes can go under. The coast gets around 3,000 mm of rain between June and September, and the Malnad ghats see landslides. North Karnataka is the opposite, with April and May taking Kalaburagi and Vijayapura above 42°C. Mysuru Dasara in October fills that city. November to February suits a move almost anywhere in the state.

Is the Shiradi ghat open for a move to Mangaluru?
Usually, but check it before the date is fixed. The ghat on NH 75 between Sakleshpur and Gundya has been closed for road work in past years and can shut after landslides in the monsoon. When it is closed, trucks use the Charmadi ghat or go round by Madikeri and the Sampaje ghat, which adds hours. The route is settled in the week of the move.
Do Bengaluru apartment associations charge for moving in or out?
Some do. An association may charge a move-in or move-out fee, ask for a refundable deposit, or both, and almost all want the maintenance account cleared and, for tenants, the owner told. Ask the association office for its shifting rules a week ahead. The lift booking, the permitted hours and whether the truck may enter the compound all come from the same office.
When can a truck move through Bengaluru?
Heavy goods vehicles are kept off central Bengaluru's roads for much of the day, and junctions such as Silk Board, Hebbal and those along the Outer Ring Road crawl at office hours. A move is planned so the loaded truck crosses the city early in the morning, in the middle of the day or at night, and weekends are often easier than weekdays.
I have a transfer to a north Karnataka town in April. Anything to plan for?
The heat. Kalaburagi, Vijayapura and Raichur are above 40°C by April, so packing and loading are done in the early morning, and televisions and fridges should not bake in a parked truck through the afternoon. Carry drinking water for the day. Houses there are mostly independent, so the truck can usually reach the door, and the distances between towns are long.
