Kochi is a mainland city with a string of islands off its western edge. On the mainland, Ernakulam, Kaloor, Kadavanthra and Panampilly Nagar mix apartment towers with older houses, Kakkanad, Edappally and Vyttila have high-rise flats near Infopark and the highway, and Thrippunithura and Aluva hold older family homes. Across the water, Fort Kochi and Mattancherry keep Portuguese, Dutch and Jew Town buildings on narrow streets, Willingdon Island belongs to the port and the navy, and Vypeen is reached over the Goshree bridges.
People who come to Kochi for work usually rent in the towers, which have service lifts, guards who log every vehicle and associations with set hours for shifting. The older houses around Ernakulam and Thrippunithura are big, with teak furniture, carved doors and cupboards built into the walls, and they take a while to pack. The islands are a case of their own: Vypeen's roads narrow quickly off the highway, Fort Kochi's lanes fit only a small vehicle, and Willingdon Island's gates want paperwork before a truck goes in.
Kochi's work comes from the sea and from offices. The port, Cochin Shipyard, the Southern Naval Command, the BPCL refinery at Ambalamugal and FACT at Eloor bring officers and engineers on transfer. Packers and movers charges in Kochi
Nothing in Kochi is very far, and the time goes on the roads. Kakkanad to Kaloor is about 12 km, Edappally to Fort Kochi around 18 km and Aluva to Thrippunithura nearer 25 km, and any of them can take an hour with a loaded truck at the wrong time. A two bedroom flat is still a one-day move. The usual hold-ups are the Vyttila, Edappally and Kundannoor junctions, the Thoppumpady bridge towards Fort Kochi and the container traffic on the Vypeen road, and a waterlogged street in the monsoon can add another hour.

Kakkanad and Infopark
Towers beside the IT parks, with service lifts and gate rules that are strictly kept. Seaport-Airport Road clogs at shift time, so the lorry is booked for an early slot.
Edappally and Palarivattom
Flats around two of the city's busiest junctions, on the highway and the Aluva road. Nobody can stop on the main road, so loading happens inside the compound or from a by-lane.
Fort Kochi and Mattancherry
Heritage streets of old houses, godowns and tourist traffic. Only a small vehicle gets through, and Jew Town is thick with visitors by mid morning.
Willingdon Island
Port and navy quarters, customs offices and hotels. Security posts check every vehicle, so the truck number and crew names are sent in before the day.
Vypeen and Vallarpadam
Houses and fishing villages over the Goshree bridges, sharing the road with container lorries from the terminal. Village lanes are tight, and a smaller truck finishes the trip.
Thrippunithura
Old family homes and newer flats in the royal town to the south-east, with narrow roads around the Hill Palace and the temple, and heavy crowds at Onam.

Society and building rules
Kochi's apartment associations run a tight ship. Expect a move-out form, the maintenance account cleared, the service lift reserved for a set window and shifting allowed in daytime only, often not on Sundays. A tenant is asked for the owner's written approval, so request it well ahead. Navy quarters on Willingdon Island and at Kathari Bagh, and port housing, go back after an inspection, with the vehicle cleared at the gate, and the loading day is fitted around it. An old Thrippunithura house has no office at all, only neighbours who share the lane.

Where the truck can stand
Towers in Kakkanad, Vyttila and Edappally have compounds with room for a lorry. The older parts of Ernakulam, around Broadway, Market Road and Chittoor Road, are narrow and lined with shops, and no truck can wait there once trade begins. In Fort Kochi and Mattancherry the lanes allow only a small vehicle. On Vypeen the road beyond the Goshree bridges is good, though houses deep in the fishing villages need a smaller truck for the final part. On Willingdon Island the truck parks wherever security points.

Traffic and timing
Vyttila, Edappally, Palarivattom and Kundannoor are the junctions to keep away from between 8 and 10.30 am and after 5 pm. Container lorries from Vallarpadam add to the load on the Goshree and Kalamassery roads all day. Onam season packs MG Road and Broadway with shoppers, and the Athachamayam procession shuts Thrippunithura for a morning. In Fort Kochi, New Year's Eve and the Cochin Carnival fill every street, and a Biennale year brings visitors from December to March. Early weekday mornings are the calmest.

Weather and the months to plan around
The southwest monsoon breaks over Kochi in early June and stays until September, with heavy, frequent rain, and the northeast rains follow in October and November. MG Road, Kaloor, the streets around the KSRTC stand and South station, and low parts of Kadavanthra waterlog after a heavy spell, so a move is timed to the forecast. The air is humid all year, which is hard on wood, mattresses and electronics, so each gets a moisture layer and nothing sits on wet ground. January to March is the driest stretch.

Our flat is in Fort Kochi. Can a truck get to it?
Usually only a small one. Fort Kochi's lanes are narrow and busy with visitors, and many buildings have no space in front, so a mini truck comes to the door and hands the load over to a bigger lorry waiting on a wider road outside the old quarter. Loading starts early, before the tourist traffic, and we keep well away from Carnival and New Year week.
I am a naval officer posted out of Kochi. What do you need for the quarters and the gate?
Start with the date your quarters on Willingdon Island or at Kathari Bagh must be handed back. The naval base controls entry, so the gate office needs the truck's registration and the crew's names well before the day. Packing finishes before the inspection. The claim gets a room-by-room packing list with our GST invoice, and a car can follow separately on a carrier.
Can I move in July, in the middle of the monsoon?
Yes, with the day shaped around the rain. Every carton is sealed in plastic before its outer wrap, sofas and mattresses are covered twice, and a tarpaulin covers the walk from the door to the truck. Loading pauses in a downpour. If you live near MG Road, Kaloor or South station, a heavy morning can flood the approach, so we keep the afternoon free as a fallback.
Our Kakkanad association allows shifting only between set hours. Is that a problem?
Not at all, it is normal in the towers there. We send the association the crew list and vehicle details a day ahead, reserve the service lift through them, and fit the packing inside the window they give. Clear the maintenance account first, since some associations hold back the gate pass until it is settled.
