Shifting homes in Margao
Margao is south Goa's market town and the seat of the district. Around the church square, in Borda and in Aquem it has old Goan houses with deep verandahs, tiled roofs and rooms of carved rosewood and teak. Fatorda, Gogol and the Colva road have apartment buildings, and Navelim, Nuvem and Raia just outside have village homes and new villas. Plenty of families have lived in one house for generations, and moving out of one means sorting through what those generations left.
Old houses need care. Antique cupboards, four-poster beds and glass-fronted showcases are fragile and heavy at once, and some were built in place and do not come apart easily, so we see the house before quoting. A flat in Fatorda is simpler: a lift in newer buildings, stairs in older ones, and parking at the gate. In the villages, the lane to the house decides the vehicle.
People move to Margao for jobs in the Verna and Cuncolim industrial estates, the hospitals, the colleges and the railway, since Madgaon is a main station on the Konkan line, and to retire in the south. They leave for work in Mumbai, Bangalore and the Gulf, or on postings, and some Goan families divide their year between a house here and a flat elsewhere. Margao and its villages sit close together. Fatorda to Navelim is about 4 km and Margao to Colva about 7 km, so a flat moves in a morning and a house in a day. A move to Panaji, about 35 km away, is still packed and unloaded on the same day. What slows things down is the old town's lanes, the careful carrying at a heritage house full of fragile pieces, and, from June to September, the rain.

Margao town and the church square
Old houses and shops around the Holy Spirit Church and the market streets. Lanes are narrow and busy by mid morning, so the loading starts early.
Borda and Aquem
Heritage houses with large rooms and old furniture, on roads that range from comfortable to one car wide. The survey decides whether the truck gets to the gate.
Fatorda
Apartment buildings near the Nehru stadium and the Colva road, most with a lift and parking. On football match days the roads around the stadium clog in the evening.
Gogol and Pajifond

Society and building rules
Apartment buildings here are usually co-operative societies, and they want the secretary told in advance, dues cleared and the move done in daytime, with some asking tenants for the owner's approval. Plenty of flat owners live abroad or in Mumbai, so get that approval in writing early. Landlords in Goa are expected to register their tenants with the police, so if you are moving in, keep your ID ready. Heritage houses need nothing formal, though a family of co-owners should agree on what goes.

Where the truck can stand
The main roads through Margao, Fatorda and the Colva road take a 14 ft truck. The market lanes and the streets of the old town are tight and busy, and some are one-way. In the villages, high laterite compound walls and narrow roads make turning hard, and at the beach end the ground is sand. The answer is usually the same: the truck parks where the ground is firm and there is room to turn, and a pickup covers the rest.

Traffic and timing
Traffic is heaviest around the Municipal Garden, the old market, the Kadamba bus stand and the railway station from mid morning to evening, and loading in town should be done by 10 am. Carnival in February and Shigmo in March bring float parades through Margao that close the main roads for an afternoon and evening. Christmas and New Year fill the beach villages. Ganesh Chaturthi is a family festival here, and many shops and offices shut for several days.

Weather and the months to plan around
Goa's monsoon is heavy and long, from early June to late September, with days of steady rain and strong wind. We pack everything with a plastic layer under the wrap, keep tarpaulins on the truck and carry cartons under cover. Humidity stays high all year, and old wooden furniture and leather go mouldy if they sit packed for weeks. April and May are hot and sticky. We would pick a date between November and February, when the air is dry and pleasant.

How do you move antique furniture from an old house in Borda or Aquem?
Slowly, and with the right materials. Carved pieces are wrapped in soft layers first and then in corrugated sheet, glass doors are taped and padded, and anything that comes apart is opened only at the joints meant for it. We look at the doors and verandah steps during the survey, and a fragile piece that needs a wooden crate is quoted separately.
Can a truck reach a house in Colva or Benaulim?
Often not to the door. The approach to many beach houses is loose sand, and a loaded truck can sink into it. We park on firm ground at the road and bring the goods across with a pickup or on trolleys. Tell us the exact house when you ask for a quote, and we will check the approach first.
Is it a bad idea to move during the Goa monsoon?
It can be done with some care. Everything gets a plastic layer, the truck is covered, and loading stops during a downpour. The ghat roads to Belgaum and Hubli are slow and slippery in the rain, so a move out of Goa between June and September comes with a wider delivery window.
My landlord lives abroad. What do I need before moving out?
A written note or email from the owner agreeing to the move, if your building asks for one, and a plan for handing the keys to whoever looks after the flat. Settle the society dues and the electricity bill first. If the owner wants a walk-through on a video call, fix it before moving day so the truck is not kept waiting.
