Shifting homes in Mysore
Much of Mysore lives in independent houses. The planned layouts of Vijayanagar, Kuvempunagar, Saraswathipuram, Jayalakshmipuram and Gokulam are rows of one and two storey homes, each with a compound, a gate and an inside staircase up to a terrace room. Apartment blocks are newer and fewer, mostly off the Ring Road and towards Bogadi and Hebbal. Around the Palace, in Lashkar Mohalla, Mandi Mohalla and the streets behind Devaraja Market, the houses are older, deeper and built close together.
A Mysore house has usually been lived in for a long time, and that shows at packing time. Rosewood cots, steel almirahs, brass vessels, a grinding stone, shelves of books and a garage of garden tools all come out. Packing is the longer half of the day here, and a parents' home being closed up after decades is often given two. The roads, by contrast, are kind, with room for a truck outside nearly every house in the layouts.
The University of Mysore, CFTRI, the Central Institute of Indian Languages and the medical colleges bring teachers, researchers and students. The Infosys campus and the Hebbal and Metagalli industrial areas bring engineers and plant staff. The city's name as an easy, green place to retire brings families from Bangalore and further away, while grown children leaving for work take plenty of households in the other direction.

Packers and movers charges in Mysore
Mysore is compact. Vijayanagar to Kuvempunagar is about 8 km, and Hebbal to Srirampura, right across the city, is under 15 km, much of it on the Ring Road. A 2 BHK leaves its old address in the morning and is set up in the new house by evening, and a large family house moves on the second day. The slow parts are the market area at midday, the roads around the Palace when tourist coaches are parked, and a long carry from a house at the end of a narrow lane in the old town.

Vijayanagar
Four stages of wide, straight roads and independent houses. The truck pulls up at the gate, and the only real work is the staircase to the first floor or the terrace room.
Kuvempunagar and Saraswathipuram
Older layouts with large families in large houses, heavy wooden furniture and narrow inside stairs. Packing takes longer here than anywhere else in town.
Gokulam and VV Mohalla
Quiet streets of houses and small flats, some let for months at a time to visitors who come for yoga. Their moves are small: a few cartons and a mattress.
Devaraja Market and the old mohallas
Busy lanes around the market and Sayyaji Rao Road. We load before the shops open, and a tempo carries goods out to the truck on a wider street.
Hebbal, Hootagalli and the Ring Road
Apartment blocks and newer layouts near the Infosys campus and the industrial areas, with lifts in most buildings and easy access from the Ring Road.
Bogadi and Srirampura
Growing suburbs on the city's western and southern edges, with new houses beside empty plots and a few cross roads that turn soft after rain.

Society and building rules
Few Mysore homes have a society office to deal with. In an independent house the permission that matters is the landlord's, and it helps to note the electricity and water readings with the owner before the truck comes, since the deposit is usually returned only after that. The apartment blocks near the Ring Road have associations that want a few days' notice, book the lift for a set time and ask tenants for the owner's go-ahead. University and government quarters have their own handover, and the loading date follows it.

Where the truck can stand
The layouts are some of the easiest places in Karnataka to bring a truck: wide roads, little parking on them and a gate at every house. The problems are in the old centre. Lanes off Sayyaji Rao Road, around Devaraja Market and on the Mandi Mohalla side are narrow and crowded, and a 14 ft truck cannot turn in them, so a smaller vehicle does the shuttling. Near the Palace some roads are one way and tourist buses park along them, which limits where a truck may stop.

Traffic and timing
Dasara is the event to plan around. For its ten days in September or October the Palace is lit, the centre fills with visitors, and on Vijayadashami the Jamboo Savari procession closes Sayyaji Rao Road and the route to Bannimantap for most of the day. Keep any move near the centre away from those dates. The rest of the year, traffic is heaviest around K R Circle, Hardinge Circle and the Ring Road junctions at office hours, and loading goes quickest on a weekday morning.

Weather and the months to plan around
Mysore stays pleasant for most of the year. April and May are the warm months, with afternoons around 35°C. The southwest monsoon from June brings steady but moderate rain, and the heavier spells come with the northeast rains in October and November, often as evening thunderstorms. Old houses take in damp in those months, so wooden furniture and books are wrapped with a moisture layer. If you can choose, go for the dry spell between November and February.

Mysore sends people mostly towards Bangalore, now a short run on the expressway, and receives plenty from it. Can I move house during Dasara?
Away from the centre, yes, on most days. The difficulty is the area around the Palace, Sayyaji Rao Road and K R Circle, which fills with visitors for the whole festival and closes to traffic on the day of the Jamboo Savari. If your old or new house is near there, pick a date a week either side, and book early if it falls in the school holidays.
We are closing my parents' house in Kuvempunagar after thirty years. How do you plan that?
We start by walking through the whole house with you, in person or over video, including the loft, the store room and the terrace. A house like that usually takes a day and a half to pack. Things meant for different children can be packed and labelled separately, and if they are going to different cities we quote each destination on its own, in writing.
Is there a night restriction on the road to Kerala?
Yes. The highways from Mysore to Kozhikode and to Ooty pass through Bandipur, and traffic is not allowed through the forest between 9 pm and 6 am. A load going to Kerala by that road sets off early enough to clear the forest in daylight, and we build that into the delivery date we give you.
Can you bring our household from Bangalore to Mysore in a day?
Yes. At about 150 km on the expressway it is a same-day move for most homes, with the loading done in Bangalore by late morning and the unloading here before dark. The Bangalore end usually takes longer, with an association slot and a lift to wait for, so we start there early.
How much do movers in Mysore charge for a 2 BHK?
