Kannur spreads over low laterite hills behind the sea. The town centre, Fort Road, Thavakkara and the bus stands, is compact and busy, and the residential areas of Thana, Chovva, Thalap, Pallikunnu and Burnassery climb and dip around it. Houses are mostly two storey, built of red laterite quarried nearby, often with Gulf money, and set in compounds with a well and coconut palms. Apartment blocks are few and fairly recent.
Kannur has Kerala's only cantonment. The Defence Security Corps centre at Burnassery brings army postings, the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala, further north, brings officers, and the airport at Mattannur has added staff and new housing on that side. Kannur University at Mangattuparamba, the medical college at Pariyaram and the government offices bring transfers. Handloom cooperatives, the plywood and timber mills at Valapattanam and the Dinesh Beedi cooperative are the older employers.
The ground shapes a Kannur move. Houses sit above or below the road, reached by steps cut into laterite or a steep concrete drive, and the lanes between compound walls are narrow. Kannur town is small. Thana to Pallikunnu is about 5 km and the cantonment to Chovva around 4 km, so most moves inside town take a morning to load and an afternoon to unload. The drive is seldom the issue. The carry is: a flight of steps to a house under road level, a drive too steep for a loaded truck, or a lane too narrow for it. Moves out to Taliparamba, Thalassery or Mattannur, 20 to 30 km away, still fit in one day.

Kannur is mostly independent houses, and the owner, often working in the Gulf, is the one whose consent matters, while a relative usually holds the keys. Apartment blocks, still a handful, expect notice and a daytime move. Army quarters in the cantonment go back after an inspection, with vehicle passes arranged through the unit, and naval quarters at Ezhimala follow the academy's rules. University and medical college quarters have fixed handover dates.

Where the truck can stand
The town roads take a 14 ft truck, though Fort Road and the bus stand area are too busy for it to stand long. The residential lanes are the harder part. They wind between laterite walls, often without room to turn, and some houses are reached only on foot, by steps. The approach is checked during the survey, the lorry is parked where it can turn, and where needed a smaller vehicle goes to the door. Cantonment roads are wide, but entry is controlled.

Traffic and timing
Traffic is modest outside the centre, where Thavakkara, Caltex junction and the Fort Road area slow at office and school hours. The Theyyam season from October to May brings night-long performances at shrines across the district, and roads near a busy kavu fill on its festival nights. Parassinikadavu draws pilgrims every day. A hartal called at short notice can close shops and roads for a day, so a moving date sometimes has to shift.

Weather and the months to plan around
The monsoon falls hard on Kannur, among the wettest parts of Kerala, from June to September, when laterite steps turn slippery and red mud washes onto the lanes. The hill roads east, towards Iritty and the Makkootam pass into Coorg, can close after landslides. Humidity is high all year and salt air near the coast adds to it, so furniture and electronics carry an extra wrap against the damp. March to May is hot and humid, and December to February is dry, making it the easiest window for a move.

The house we are leaving in Chovva is down a flight of laterite steps. How do you move the heavy pieces?
With more people and more time. We count the steps when we survey, note whether they are even and how wide the turns are, and plan the crew for the carry. Heavy almirahs and cots are opened up, and a large sofa may take four people. In the rain the steps are slippery, so we pick a dry morning where we can.
I am posted out of the DSC Centre in the Kannur Cantonment. How is the gate pass arranged?

Can you move us to Bangalore through Coorg?
Yes. The usual road climbs from Iritty over the Makkootam pass into Coorg, then runs through Virajpet and Hunsur to Mysore and on to Bangalore, about 360 km in all. The pass is slow and narrow, and in the monsoon a landslide can close it and send the lorry round another way. The delivery window we give you allows for that.
Is July too wet for a move in Kannur?
It is the wettest month, but moves still happen. Cartons are sealed in plastic, furniture is wrapped twice, and a tarpaulin covers the carry to the truck. Laterite steps and red-mud lanes get slippery, so the crew takes its time. If you can wait, December to February is dry and far easier.
