Mananchira, SM Street and Palayam
The old commercial centre. SM Street is closed to traffic and Palayam market is crowded all day, so goods are carried to a vehicle parked on a side road.
Kuttichira
Old tharavad houses, mosques and narrow lanes near the beach. A small vehicle does the lanes, and the crew keeps clear of the hours around Friday prayers.
West Hill and Nadakkavu
Established residential areas on the northern side with houses and flats. Decent roads, some steep driveways, and quick access to the bypass.
Mavoor Road and Eranhipalam
Apartment towers and busy main roads. Low stretches of Mavoor Road flood in heavy rain, so the moving date follows the weather.
Medical College and Chevayur
Houses, hostels and rented rooms around the hospital. Traffic peaks with outpatient hours, and the crew keeps out of the ambulance routes.
Feroke and Ramanattukara
Large family houses to the south along the highway. Plenty of road at the gate, though a house set far back in its compound means a long carry.

Society and building rules
In Kozhikode the owner is often abroad, so a tenant's permission to move may arrive by WhatsApp from the Gulf, and it is worth getting it in writing before booking. Apartment associations on Mavoor Road and the bypass want notice, dues paid and a daytime slot. A house that has been locked for months needs its wiring and water checked before the move in, since a dead pump or a tripped circuit can hold up unloading. Medical College and university quarters have fixed vacating dates.

Where the truck can stand
The suburbs and the bypass have room for a full-size lorry. The old town does not: SM Street is closed to vehicles, the lanes of Kuttichira and Valiyangadi are narrow and crowded with goods lorries, and the Big Bazaar area is busy from early morning. A mini truck takes goods out to the lorry on Beach Road or the Kallai road. Plenty of suburban houses sit up or down a slope from the road, and some are reached by lanes squeezed between compound walls, hardly a car's width.

Traffic and timing
Palayam, Mananchira and the roads around the railway station are busy all day, and Thondayad, Malaparamba and Ramanattukara on the bypass slow down at office hours. In Ramadan, evenings on SM Street and around Kuttichira fill with people after sunset, and Eid shopping crowds the old town, so moves there are kept to the morning. The Gulf school holidays in July and August bring families home, and dates in those weeks go quickly, so book ahead.

Weather and the months to plan around
Kozhikode takes heavy southwest monsoon rain from June to September, July being the wettest, and low parts of Mavoor Road, Sarovaram and the areas near the canal waterlog quickly. The Thamarassery ghat to Wayanad and Mysore can be blocked by landslides or traffic for hours in those months. Humidity is high all year, so glass cabinets, leather sofas and electronics get a damp barrier in their wrapping. March to May is hot and sticky. The dry, mild weeks from December to February are when Kozhikode moves go most smoothly.

Often not. Many drives around Chevayur and Medical College are steep and narrow, and a heavy lorry loses grip in the rain. The gradient is checked during the survey, and if it is too much the lorry stands on the road and everything climbs the last bit by hand or in a pickup. The extra time is written into the quote.
Is the Thamarassery ghat a problem for a move to Bangalore?
Sometimes. The ghat to Wayanad has nine hairpin bends and gets blocked by heavy traffic, breakdowns or, in the monsoon, landslides. Beyond it, the road through the Bandipur forest is closed at night, so a truck leaving Kozhikode in the afternoon may have to wait for morning. Can you shift a house in Kuttichira?
Yes. The lanes are narrow and many old houses stand close together around the mosques and the pond, so a small vehicle works the lane and the lorry waits on Beach Road or another broad street nearby.
