Shifting homes in Amritsar
Amritsar grew around the Golden Temple, and the walled city still holds much of its life. Inside the old gates, the katras and bazaars such as Hall Bazaar, Katra Jaimal Singh and Guru Bazaar are lined with tall, narrow houses of thin Nanakshahi brick, three or four storeys over a shop, with a steep stair and rooms stacked one above another. Heritage Street, the approach from Town Hall to the temple, is closed to traffic altogether.
Outside the walls the city is newer and roomier. Ranjit Avenue, Green Avenue, Basant Avenue and Lawrence Road have kothis on generous plots, and flats have been rising along the Majitha Road, the Batala Road and the GT Road. A walled city home usually holds less furniture than a kothi but takes longer to move, since everything goes down a narrow stair and out to a vehicle by hand. A kothi needs a bigger crew and a full truck at the gate.
Work here is trade and pilgrims, the textile and food units of Chheharta and the Batala Road, and a large army and BSF presence in the Cantonment and out along the road to Attari. Guru Nanak Dev University, Khalsa College and the Government Medical College fill the city with students and teaching staff. Postings keep officers arriving and leaving on fixed dates, while younger people head to Chandigarh, Delhi NCR and further for work.

Most of Amritsar lies within 10 km of the Golden Temple. Ranjit Avenue to Green Avenue is a short hop, and the walled city to a colony near Guru Nanak Dev University is about 8 km. A flat or a small kothi moves in a day. A walled city house takes longer than its size suggests, because of the stairs and the shuttle out to the truck, and the traffic at Bhandari Bridge, Hall Gate and around the railway station can hold a loaded vehicle for half an hour.

Ranjit Avenue

Green Avenue and Lawrence Road
Older kothis on shaded roads close to the centre. Access is easy, but the shops and food stalls on Lawrence Road make it a morning job.
Majitha Road and Batala Road
Colonies, hospitals and new apartment blocks on busy roads out of the city. The truck ducks into a side street to load, because stopping on the main road holds up buses and ambulances.
The Cantonment
Army lines and officers' quarters behind a formal gate. Truck and crew details go in beforehand, and the loading follows the quarters handover date.

Society and building rules
Few Amritsar homes answer to a society office. Apartment blocks in Ranjit Avenue and on the Majitha Road want notice to the management, dues settled and a daytime slot for the lift. In a rented kothi portion the owner is often upstairs or next door, and agreeing the day, the final bills and the handover of keys with them avoids a standoff at the gate. Army, BSF and university quarters each have their own inspection, and the move date is taken from it.

Where the truck can stand
Inside the walled city a truck cannot go at all. The approaches near the Golden Temple are closed to vehicles, the bazaar lanes are narrow enough to touch both walls, and loading happens wherever a small loader can stop. The main truck waits outside the gates, often on the Circular Road. Outside the walls, kothis in the avenues have room at the gate, and on the busy roads such as the Majitha Road the truck pulls into a side street to load.

Traffic and timing
The walled city is busiest from late morning until night, and a move there starts at dawn. Gurpurabs, Bandi Chhor Divas at Diwali and Baisakhi bring very large crowds to the Golden Temple, and the roads around it close to vehicles, so an old city move keeps away from those days. The GT Road towards Attari can be slow in the afternoon, when visitors head for the border ceremony. Weekday mornings are the easiest time for a move anywhere in the city.

Weather and the months to plan around
Amritsar has some of the hardest weather in Punjab. June afternoons pass 45°C, so loading begins early and electronics wait in the shade. Monsoon downpours in July and August put water on the lower roads and in the walled city lanes for a few hours. Winter is sharp, with nights near freezing in January and fog so dense that trains and flights run late and a loaded truck cannot drive at night. Late February, March, October and November are the gentlest months.

Yes, with a different plan. A video call comes first, so we can see the house, the stairs and the lane. The truck waits outside the old gates, a small loader comes as close as the lane allows, and the crew carries the rest by hand. Double beds and almirahs usually come apart upstairs. We start at first light and avoid gurpurab and festival days, when the approaches are closed.
I am posted out of Amritsar Cantonment. Can you work to my handover date?
Yes. The Cantonment gate wants the names of the crew and the registration of the truck before it issues a pass, and we also need the date your quarters will be inspected. Packing and loading are fitted in before it. For the claim you receive an item-by-item goods list with a GST bill. A car or motorcycle follows on a carrier, arriving at the new posting a few days apart from the household.
Does the January fog hold up a move from Amritsar?
It slows long loads more than local ones.
