Kapurthala was a princely capital, and its maharaja built on a grand scale. The Jagatjit Palace, modelled on Versailles, now houses the Sainik School, and the Moorish Mosque, the Shalimar Bagh and the Panch Mandir stand in or near the old town. Around them the bazaars and mohallas are closely built, with two and three storey houses, steep inside stairs and lanes that suit a scooter far better than a truck.
Just outside town, the Rail Coach Factory at Hussainpur builds passenger coaches for Indian Railways and houses its staff in a large planned colony with its own schools, hospital and shops. Railway officers and supervisors arrive from all over India on posting and leave on transfer, and their quarters go back on a set date. IK Gujral Punjab Technical University and Pushpa Gujral Science City sit on the Jalandhar road, and Sultanpur Lodhi, with its gurdwaras on the Kali Bein, is 25 km away.
The newer colonies along the Jalandhar and Sultanpur roads are independent houses on plots, many built by families with sons and daughters in Canada, England or Italy. Some stay locked for months, and when the family returns or sells, the house is emptied room by room. The Doaba villages around the town hold farmhouses with wide yards but narrow approach roads between the fields, and those roads decide what size of vehicle can reach them.

Society and building rules
Society rules hardly exist in Kapurthala. Tenants agree a moving date with their owner, then clear the power bill and deposit before loading. RCF quarters are returned through the colony's estate office, which checks fittings and meters before accepting the keys, so we pack the day before that visit. University and Sainik School staff housing follow their own dates. For a house whose owner lives abroad, a relative with the keys and a written note from the owner keeps the day simple.

Where the truck can stand
Kapurthala's main roads, the RCF colony and the colonies on the Jalandhar road all take a 17 ft truck. In the old town it cannot. Its bazaars are narrow and busy from mid morning, and some mohallas are reached through gateways and turns a truck cannot make, so a tempo carries the load out. Field roads to village houses are often a single lane between crops, and after rain a heavy truck can sink at the edge.

Traffic and timing
Kapurthala is quiet by Punjab standards. The bazaar near the palace fills from late morning, and the Jalandhar road is busy with college and office traffic. Gurpurabs, above all Guru Nanak's, bring huge crowds to Sultanpur Lodhi, and the road there is slow for days around them. The paddy and wheat harvests put tractors and trolleys on every village road. A weekday morning start is easiest.

Weather and the months to plan around
Kapurthala lies between the Beas and the Sutlej, and in a wet year the rivers matter: heavy monsoon rain and water released from the dams have flooded villages towards Sultanpur Lodhi more than once. In town, a July or August downpour only holds a move up for a few hours. May and June reach 44°C, and loading ends by noon. December and January bring cold and fog, and the most comfortable months for moving are February and March, then October and November.

Can a truck get into the old town near the palace?
Not into most of it. The bazaar lanes and mohallas are too narrow, so the truck parks on a main road and a tempo makes trips to your door, while heavy pieces are carried down the stairs. Starting before the bazaar wakes up saves a good hour. We check the lane on a video call before giving the quote.
The family is abroad and the house has been locked for a year. Can you pack it?
Yes. A relative or caretaker opens the house, and the owner joins a video call to say what goes, what stays and where each lot is headed. Goods for different family members can be packed and listed separately. If the house has been shut through a monsoon, tell us, since damp furniture and books need to dry before they are wrapped.
