Most of Jalandhar lives in kothis and floors with no society office, so it is the landlord you settle with: the rent, the electricity bill and the security deposit, ideally with the meter photographed on the day. The handful of apartment blocks on the GT Road and the Nakodar Road expect a written note, no dues outstanding and a lift booked for daytime. Cantonment, BSF and PAP quarters have their own inspection and clearance, and the loading is planned for the day before it.

Where the truck can stand
A 17 ft truck gets to the gate in Model Town, Defence Colony and the Urban Estates, though parked cars on the inner roads can make the last turn tight. The old city lanes and the bastis are another matter, and there a tempo runs goods out to the truck waiting on a wider road. Along the GT Road the loading happens in the service lane, never on the highway itself. Inside the Cantonment it stands wherever the gate staff direct.

Traffic and timing
Traffic in Jalandhar knots up at BMC Chowk, PAP Chowk, Rama Mandi and Maqsudan Chowk, worst at school and office hours. The old markets fill from late morning, and Model Town's from late afternoon. The Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan at Devi Talab Mandir brings crowds for several nights in late December, and Diwali shopping jams the bazaars for two weeks. Starting at 7 am on a weekday gets the truck clear of most of this.

Weather and the months to plan around
Jalandhar's summer peaks in May and June at around 44°C, and the crew packs from early morning, and nothing electronic is left to bake in a shut truck. The monsoon, from July to mid September, brings downpours that waterlog low roads and some colonies for a few hours at a stretch. The cold months, December and January, are foggy too, with mornings so thick that long loads leave only after the fog lifts. The pleasant spells run from mid February through March and again from October into November.

Your claim file gets the goods listed item by item, plus a GST bill, and if there is a car or a bike, it follows on a vehicle carrier.
Can you move a room from a hostel or PG near LPU or NIT?
Yes. An LPU or NIT room is usually a mattress, a cooler, a study table and a stack of cartons, cleared in an hour or two. For a room going home to another state, we check for spare room on a lorry already bound that way. That route is cheaper and slower, and we can look for it but it is never a promise. Book a week ahead at the end of term.
