Uniformed families make up a large share of the town. Mamun Cantonment is one of the biggest army stations in Asia, and the Air Force Station and several smaller units sit around the town. Postings come and go all year, with quarters that are inspected before handover and dates that do not move. Their homes are compact but well stocked, with crockery, carpets, trunks and furniture that has been packed at every posting.
Civilian Pathankot is a market town of houses and small apartment blocks. The colonies on Dhangu Road, Dalhousie Road and Saili Road are mostly two storey houses on plots, with rented portions upstairs, and the older bazaars near the station are packed close. Wholesale traders who supply the hill towns keep the markets busy. People leave for jobs in Jalandhar, Chandigarh and Delhi, or move up to Dharamshala and across to Jammu.

Army and air force quarters are the formal ones. The unit's estate office inspects the quarters, checks fittings and meters and takes the keys back on a set day, so the packing is finished before the inspection starts. In town there are few society offices, and a landlord who lives on the ground floor wants the rent and electricity settled and a word about the truck standing at the gate. The small apartment blocks ask for notice and daytime moving.

Roads inside the cantonment and the air force station are wide, and the gate staff decide where the truck may park. In town, Dalhousie Road and Saili Road take a 17 ft truck, while the bazaar lanes near the station need a tempo. For a load going on into the hills, to Dalhousie, Dharamshala or a Kangra village, a smaller vehicle often takes over, because the bends and gradients beyond the plains are too much for a long truck.

Traffic and timing
Dhangu Road, with the stretch by the bus stand and the station, is where traffic crawls, especially at school hours and in the evening. Army convoys use the highway towards Jammu, and a truck may wait behind one. In the summer season, tourist traffic to Dalhousie and Dharamshala fills the roads north, so a hill-bound load leaves early in the morning. Weekday mornings are the easiest time in town.

Weather and the months to plan around
Pathankot sits against the hills and gets heavier rain than most of Punjab. In July and August a heavy downpour leaves water on the low roads for some hours, and the Chakki and the Ravi run high after rain in the hills, which can shut bridges and hill roads for a day. May and June are hot, near 43°C. Winter brings cold nights and fog, and snow on the heights above Dalhousie can close roads there. October, November and March are the calmest months.

How early should I book a move out of Mamun Cantonment?
As soon as the movement order is in hand. The gate pass needs the crew names, their identity papers and the truck number, and some units take a few days to clear them. A long truck should not. The road climbs through tight bends, so for a hill address the load usually moves to a smaller vehicle, and some houses are then reached on foot by a path.
