The industrial area at Kanjikode, towards the Walayar border, has BEML, ITI and many private plants, and IIT Palakkad has grown up there too. Paddy and the trade in rice and vegetables keep the markets busy. People leave for Coimbatore, Bangalore and Chennai for work, or for the Gulf.

Where the truck can stand
Most of Palakkad takes a 14 or 17 ft lorry up to the house. The exceptions are the market streets around the fort and Big Bazaar, busy from early morning, and the agraharam streets, where the truck can usually stand in the street itself but must clear it for processions. Some lanes in Nurani and Puthur are too narrow to turn in. NH 544 carries heavy lorry traffic between Walayar and the town, and a truck loading there needs a service road or a side street.

Traffic and timing
The Kalpathy car festival in November, when temple chariots are drawn through the agraharam streets for several days, is the main event to avoid near Kalpathy. Onam and Vishu shopping fill the Big Bazaar area. NH 544 is busy all day with lorries crossing from Tamil Nadu, and the junctions at the Stadium bus stand, Sultanpet and Chandranagar slow at office hours. In the hot months the working day starts at 6 am and the heavy loading is over by 11 am.

Weather and the months to plan around
Palakkad is the hottest place in Kerala. From March to May afternoons pass 38°C and sometimes reach 40°C, and the dry wind through the gap carries dust. The crew loads early and keeps electronics and polished furniture inside. The southwest monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain, and the gap funnels strong winds through the town. It is less humid than the coast, though the damp rises in the rains. If the date is yours to pick, the cooler, rainless weeks from November to February are kindest to crew and furniture.
