Shifting homes in Coimbatore
Coimbatore is a city of houses more than towers. RS Puram, Saibaba Colony and the Race Course area have older bungalows and two storey homes on generous plots, often with an upstairs portion let to a tenant. The IT parks have brought apartment blocks to Saravanampatti, Peelamedu, Avinashi Road and Trichy Road, and villa communities have spread towards Vadavalli, Thudiyalur and Kovaipudur. Around Town Hall, Big Bazaar Street and Oppanakara Street the old town is dense, with families living over their shops.
The city earns its living making things. Textile mills, pump and motor factories, foundries, wet grinder makers and the textile machinery works at Periyanaickenpalayam employ engineers and managers, and the business families who own them tend to live in large houses filled with teak and brassware. PSG, Amrita, the Agricultural University and a long list of engineering colleges bring students and faculty. The air force station at Sulur and the training establishments at Red Fields bring service families on posting.
Moves are kinder to the crew here than in most big cities. The planned layouts leave a lorry enough road to pull up outside, apartment blocks are mid-rise, and the weather rarely stops work. The effort goes into large family homes, where a pooja room, a loft and a store room all need emptying, and into association rules in the newer complexes. The old town and the streets near Ukkadam are the exception, and there a smaller vehicle is part of the plan from the start.

Distances inside Coimbatore are modest. RS Puram to Peelamedu is roughly 9 km, and Vadavalli to Singanallur close to 18 km, which keeps an ordinary two bedroom move inside a single day. The drive slows on Avinashi Road, around Gandhipuram and Ukkadam, and at the Lakshmi Mills and Hope College junctions at office time. A large bungalow with a loft and a store room, or an old town house where every piece goes down by hand, can run into a second day.

Tree-lined roads, older bungalows and large family homes. Access is easy, but packing runs long, with teak furniture, full lofts and shelves of books to clear.
Town Hall and Big Bazaar Street
The old town's tight streets of cloth, jewellery and utensil shops. Loading finishes before 9 am, and a mini truck carries goods out to a wider road.
Saravanampatti and Sathy Road
Apartment blocks near the IT parks, with lifts and association rules. Sathy Road slows at shift change, so the truck is timed to miss it.
Peelamedu and Avinashi Road
Flats and houses near PSG, the airport and the hospitals. Avinashi Road is busy from morning to night, so loading happens from the side roads.
Vadavalli and Maruthamalai Road
Newer houses and villa communities on the western edge, below the hills. Wide roads, a few steep driveways, and some unpaved cross streets after rain.
Singanallur and Ondipudur
Houses and small apartment blocks on the Trichy Road side, near the lake and the older industrial units. There is room for a truck at most gates.

Society and building rules
Apartment associations in Saravanampatti and along Avinashi Road usually want a few days' notice, a daytime slot and the maintenance cleared before any furniture goes out, and a tenant is asked to show the owner's consent. Some newer complexes also take a refundable deposit. In the older areas the owner often lives downstairs, and that conversation matters more than any form: agree the date, read the electricity meter together and settle the last month's rent. Air force and college quarters follow their own handover dates.

Where the truck can stand
Coimbatore's planned areas are easy for a truck, with wide roads and space at the gate in RS Puram, Saibaba Colony, Peelamedu and Vadavalli. The old town is not. Around Town Hall, Big Bazaar Street, Oppanakara Street and Raja Street the streets are narrow and busy from 9 am, and near Ukkadam the fish market and the bus stand crowd the road early. There a mini truck makes short runs out to the waiting lorry. On Avinashi Road stopping is difficult at any hour, so we load from the nearest side street.

Traffic and timing
Avinashi Road and Trichy Road carry the heaviest office traffic, and the Gandhipuram, Lakshmi Mills, Hope College and Ukkadam junctions back up from about 8.30 am and again after 5 pm. The Konniamman temple car festival in February or March fills the Town Hall streets, and Vinayagar Chathurthi processions close the roads to the lakes for an evening. Weekday mornings are the easiest time, with the truck at your door by 7 am and loaded before the office rush peaks.

Weather and the months to plan around
Coimbatore has one of the gentlest climates in Tamil Nadu. From June to September the Palakkad Gap brings a cool wind and light showers from the southwest monsoon, more breezy than wet. Most of the year's rain comes in October and November with the northeast monsoon, often as evening thunderstorms that flood a few underpasses for an hour. The warmest weeks fall in April and May, when afternoons touch about 35°C. December to March, dry and mild, is the easiest time to move.

Our family house in RS Puram is full of teak furniture and brassware. How long will packing take?
Usually a full day before loading, sometimes a little more. Brass lamps and vessels are wrapped piece by piece and go into small cartons that one person can still lift. Teak cots, almirahs and dining tables are opened up where they are built to come apart, and anything that is not is measured against the doors at the survey. Loading and the drive then fit into the second morning.
I am being posted out of the air force station at Sulur. What do you need from me?
The date your quarters must be vacated, the new station, and the truck number and crew names for the gate, which we send ahead. Everything is out before the inspection, and the rooms are bare when the inspecting officer arrives. Your claim is supported by a room-wise packing list and our GST bill. If you own a car or motorcycle, it goes on a carrier and reaches you separately.
Is a move near Town Hall a problem during the Konniamman car festival?
On the day the temple car goes round, yes. The streets around Town Hall, Big Bazaar Street and Raja Street fill with people, the car's route is closed, and the days before it are crowded too. The festival falls in February or March, and we check the dates when you book. Elsewhere in the city a move goes ahead as normal.
Can you move us from Coimbatore to Kochi?
Yes. Kochi is about 190 km through the Palakkad Gap on NH 544, and a household that leaves here after breakfast normally reaches Kochi by evening, or waits for daylight if the building there insists. The load crosses into Kerala at Walayar with the inventory and our invoice in the cab. Kochi's rain and humidity are heavy, so furniture and mattresses get an extra moisture layer.
