Shifting homes across Kerala
Kerala is a long, thin state whose towns run into one another along the coast and the midlands, with few gaps of open country. Thiruvananthapuram, the capital, has the secretariat, Technopark, ISRO's space centre at Thumba and a large share of the state's government jobs. Kochi is the commercial city, with Infopark at Kakkanad, the port and shipyard, the Southern Naval Command and the refinery at Ambalamugal. Kozhikode and Kannur anchor the Malabar north, and Thrissur, Kottayam, Kollam and Palakkad are big district towns in their own right.
Work in the Gulf has shaped Kerala for decades. Money earned in Dubai, Riyadh or Doha built many of the large family houses in Malappuram, Kozhikode and Thrissur, and moves often follow a return home, a new house finished, or parents shifting closer to a child in Kochi or Bengaluru. Because the settled land is continuous, a move from one town to the next may cover only 30 or 40 km yet take half a day on two-lane roads crowded with buses.
Postings bring people too: navy and Coast Guard staff at Kochi, army and naval academy staff at Kannur and Ezhimala, central government and PSU officers, and bank staff moved between districts. Students go to Kozhikode for IIM and NIT, and to Palakkad for IIT. Young graduates leave for Bengaluru, Chennai and the Gulf, and the high ranges of Idukki and Wayanad, with their hill roads and plantation bungalows, have moves of their own.

Homes and buildings
Most Keralites live in independent houses, each in a compound behind a wall and gate, often with a sloping tiled or concrete roof and a front verandah. The approach is the problem, since many houses sit on narrow lanes or a footpath off the road, sometimes up or down steps. Kochi has the most high-rise living, with towers at Kakkanad, Edappally, Kaloor, Vyttila and along Marine Drive, and Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode have apartment blocks near the centre. Old tharavad houses, with heavy wooden doors, chests and cots, need careful dismantling.

Between cities
NH 66 follows the coast from Kasaragod through Kannur, Kozhikode, Kochi, Alappuzha and Kollam to Thiruvananthapuram, and it is being rebuilt as a six-lane road, with works slowing long stretches. NH 544 enters from Coimbatore through the Palakkad gap and runs through Thrissur to Kochi. The Western Ghats rise to the east, and the roads into Wayanad and Idukki climb through hairpin ghats such as the Thamarassery churam, where heavy vehicles face restrictions and landslides close the road in the monsoon. Across the state, two-lane roads packed with buses and two-wheelers set the pace.

Moving into or out of Kerala
Household goods enter Kerala from Tamil Nadu or Karnataka without any special permit, on the same terms as anywhere in India: an itemised list of the used belongings, the owner's declaration that they are personal effects meant for no sale, and no e-way bill in the normal case. Cars need attention if they stay. After 12 months in Kerala, a car on another state's plates has to be re-registered here with an NOC from its old RTO and Kerala road tax paid. Staff eligible for the BH series can avoid that. Families returning from the Gulf clear any shipped goods through customs before the local move.

Weather and the months to plan around
Kerala gets two monsoons. The south-west monsoon usually reaches the coast around the start of June and stays heavy until September, and the north-east monsoon brings more rain in October and November, especially in the south. Floods and landslides, as in 2018 and in Wayanad in 2024, can shut roads for days. The air is humid all year, which marks wood and upholstery packed for long. Onam in August or September and the Sabarimala season from mid-November to January are busy, and Thrissur Pooram in April or May closes the Swaraj Round. December to March is the driest stretch.

What if the truck cannot reach my house down the lane?
That is common in Kerala. The truck stops where the road is wide enough for it to stand, and the goods are carried or shuttled on a smaller vehicle from the gate. At the survey we look at the lane, any steps, and where the truck can wait without blocking a bus route. Allow extra time for the carry, especially in the rain.
Can I move during the monsoon?
Yes, and many people have to, since school and job dates fall in June. The packing changes: wood and upholstery get a breathable layer under stretch film, cartons are taped on every seam, and loading waits for a break in the rain where it can. Keep a spare day in case of a red alert, when schools shut and hill roads may close.
Will Onam or the Sabarimala season get in the way of a move?
They can. Around Thiruvonam most shops and offices close and many workers go home, so a move is harder to arrange for those days. From mid-November to January, pilgrim traffic crowds the roads through Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Erumely, especially at weekends. Moves elsewhere in the state go on as normal.
Can furniture from an old tharavad house be moved safely?
Yes, with time. Old rosewood and jackfruit wood pieces are heavy and often joined with wooden pegs, so they are taken apart only at joints meant to be opened and otherwise moved whole. Each piece is padded and wrapped, and very old or fragile ones can be crated in wood at extra cost. Tell us about them at the survey so the crew and truck are sized for them.
