Shifting homes across Jammu and Kashmir
Jammu and Kashmir is two very different places joined by one road. The Jammu division runs from the plains of Kathua, Samba and Jammu city up into the hills of Udhampur, Reasi, Rajouri and Poonch. Beyond the Pir Panjal range lies the Kashmir valley, at around 1,600 m, with Srinagar at its centre and Anantnag, Pulwama, Baramulla and Sopore around it. The Jammu-Srinagar highway, NH 44, links the two, now shortened by the Chenani-Nashri and Banihal-Qazigund tunnels, and every move between the regions depends on it.
Jammu moves are like those in any north Indian plains city: independent houses in colonies such as Gandhi Nagar, Trikuta Nagar and Channi Himmat, older lanes around Raghunath Bazaar, and heat in summer. The valley is another matter. Srinagar's old city has tall houses of brick and timber on narrow lanes near the Jhelum, the newer colonies have big family houses, and the furniture is often carved walnut, heavy and valuable. A move there follows the weather, and between December and February the cold decides everything.
Postings account for much of the movement. The army's Northern Command is at Udhampur, there are corps headquarters at Nagrota and Srinagar, and the BSF, CRPF and other forces are spread across both regions. Government offices sit in both Jammu and Srinagar. IIT Jammu, IIM Jammu, AIIMS Jammu, NIT Srinagar, SKIMS and the universities bring faculty and students, and Katra's pilgrim trade and the valley's hotels bring seasonal staff. People from here also move to Delhi, Chandigarh and Punjab for work and study.

Homes and buildings
In Jammu most homes are independent houses of two or three storeys on colony plots, with apartment blocks on the city's edges. Srinagar's newer areas, Rajbagh, Jawahar Nagar, Hyderpora and Bemina among them, have large houses with sloping roofs, wooden floors and panelling built for the cold, and the old city has houses of four or five storeys with narrow stairways. Army and paramilitary quarters, government accommodation and university hostels add their own rules. Carpets, carved walnut and papier-mache pieces are common in valley homes, and they need careful packing.

Between cities
NH 44 carries almost every move in the territory. From Lakhanpur on the Punjab border it runs past Kathua and Samba to Jammu, then climbs through Udhampur, Ramban and Banihal and drops into the valley at Qazigund. Jammu to Srinagar is about 250 km, a full day for a loaded truck, and the stretch around Ramban is prone to landslides and falling stones. Heavy vehicles on the highway are often moved one way at a time on a schedule set by the traffic police, and the road closes after heavy rain or snow. The Mughal Road from Shopian to Poonch shuts all winter.

Moving into or out of Jammu and Kashmir
For household goods, the territory works like the rest of India. Used belongings you own are not being sold, so they go on an inventory with your declaration and do not normally need an e-way bill. A car kept here beyond 12 months should take a JK registration, and one leaving for another state needs an NOC from its J&K RTO. BH series plates are available to eligible government, defence and multi-state private employees, which suits officers who move often. One practical point: a prepaid mobile connection from another state does not work here, so arrange a postpaid or local number before the move.

Weather and the months to plan around
Jammu is a plains city in summer, above 40°C in May and June, and the monsoon soaks it in July and August. The valley has a cool summer, in the low 30s at most, and a harsh winter. Chillai Kalan, the coldest 40 days, from the third week of December to the close of January, brings sub-zero nights, frozen pipes and snow that can shut the highway for days. The Amarnath Yatra in July and August puts convoys on NH 44 and brings traffic restrictions. April to June and September to November are the most reliable months for a move into or out of the valley.

What happens to our goods if the highway closes while the truck is on it?
The truck stops at a safe halt, such as Jammu, Udhampur or Ramban, and waits until the traffic police open the road. Goods stay packed and covered on the truck, and you can follow its progress on the consignment number. Where the date allows, we time a valley move for a settled spell of weather, and in winter we give a range of dates instead of one day.
How should carved walnut furniture be packed?
In layers. Carved surfaces get soft padding first so the relief is not pressed, then bubble wrap and a corrugated sheet, with stretch film to hold it all. Legs and tops come apart where the joinery allows. A wooden crate, charged extra, suits the largest or most delicate pieces. Walnut does not like sudden damp, so it is unwrapped soon after it arrives.
Can we move from Jammu to Srinagar in January?
It can be done, with room for delay. January falls in Chillai Kalan, and snow around Banihal and Qazigund can close NH 44 for a day or several. We keep the date open by a few days, pack with extra protection against cold and damp, and unload as soon as the road clears. At the Srinagar end, lanes can be icy and houses cold, so a late morning unloading is safer.
Our house is in Srinagar's old city. Will a truck get to it?
Usually not to the door. Lanes in Downtown, around Nowhatta, Khanyar and Zaina Kadal, are tight and busy. The truck stays on a main road, and the goods reach it in a small vehicle or carried by the crew. Old houses have steep wooden stairs and narrow doors, so large pieces come apart inside. The approach is checked at the survey to plan the crew and the time.
