Packers and Movers in Srinagar

Srinagar homes are built for winter. A typical house in the newer colonies is a large two or three storey building in brick or concrete, with a sloping tin roof to shed snow, wooden panelling and ceilings, and often a hamam, the heated stone-floored room where the family gathers when it freezes. In Downtown, around Nowhatta, Rajouri Kadal, Habba Kadal and Khanyar, older houses of brick and timber lean over narrow lanes. Rajbagh, Jawahar Nagar and Sonwar, near the Jhelum, are the older uptown colonies, and Hyderpora, Bemina, Sanat Nagar, Peerbagh and Rawalpora have grown fast since.

A Kashmiri family home is full, and much of it is fragile or heavy: walnut wood furniture, carved panels, carpets and namdas, copper samovars and trunks of pherans and quilts. Carpets are rolled rather than folded and walnut is wrapped thickly, since it marks easily. In Downtown the truck cannot get close, and goods are walked or ferried in a small vehicle out to the nearest road. In the colonies there is usually space at the gate, but the stairs inside are narrow and turn often.

Much of Srinagar works for the government: the Civil Secretariat, departments, banks and schools, with J&K Bank's head office on M A Road. SKIMS at Soura, the medical colleges, Kashmir University and NIT Srinagar near Hazratbal bring doctors, teachers and students, and the army's corps headquarters at Badamibagh and the air force station at the airport bring defence families. Traders, hoteliers and houseboat owners work to the tourist season. People leave for Jammu, Delhi and Chandigarh, and for colleges and jobs further south.
