Guntur is laid out in lines. The streets of Brodipet and Arundelpet run as 1st Line, 2nd Line and onward off their main roads, with cross roads between, and a Guntur address gives the line before anything else. These are the central neighbourhoods, with apartment blocks, clinics and houses close together. Old Guntur is older and denser still, while Lakshmipuram, Pattabhipuram and Brindavan Gardens are the settled family areas, and new layouts are spreading north towards the capital region.
The city's money comes from the land. The Guntur mirchi yard is counted among the largest chilli markets in Asia, and the district's tobacco, cotton and turmeric pass through the traders, cold stores and warehouses around it. The Tobacco Board has its head office here. Trading families live in big houses full of heavy furniture, often with a godown or an office attached, and those are the largest moves in town.
Medicine and education bring the rest. Guntur Medical College and the government general hospital, a long row of private hospitals, Acharya Nagarjuna University at Namburu and the private universities around Amaravati bring doctors, teachers and students. AIIMS at Mangalagiri sits on the road to Vijayawada, and many of its staff rent in Guntur. Graduates leave for Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai.

Guntur is compact, and most moves inside it are 5 to 8 km, Brodipet to Gorantla or Old Guntur to Pattabhipuram. A 2 BHK goes out and is unpacked at the other end before evening. The slow spots are the railway overbridges, Sankar Vilas above all, which carry traffic between the two halves of town and jam at peak hours, and the lanes of Old Guntur and Arundelpet, where goods go out by tempo. Tenali, Mangalagiri and Vijayawada are all within a one-day run.

Old Guntur
The older town, with houses built wall to wall on tight lanes. A tempo shuttles to the main road, and big furniture comes down steep stairs by hand.
Lakshmipuram and Pattabhipuram
Settled family areas with independent houses and mid-rise flats on decent roads. A truck usually stands at the gate, and packing is the longer job.

Roads jammed with chilli lorries and tractors in the peak arrival months. Moves nearby begin at dawn, and the truck waits on a road away from the queue.
Gorantla and the Amaravati road

Society and building rules
Apartment blocks in Brodipet, Lakshmipuram and on the Amaravati road are run by associations, which expect notice, a clean maintenance record and a lift booking in daylight. A tenant often needs the owner to speak to the secretary before furniture leaves. Independent houses have no such rules, though a landlord will want the rent and the power bill settled. Hospital staff quarters, university housing and government quarters each follow their own handover and inspection.

Where the truck can stand
A 17 ft truck gets around Lakshmipuram, Pattabhipuram and the Amaravati road without trouble. The lines of Brodipet and Arundelpet are narrower, with two-wheelers parked along both sides, and a smaller truck or a tempo is safer there. Old Guntur's lanes take nothing bigger than a tempo. Near the mirchi yard, from January to April, lorries queue along the roads and a truck may not get close, so we load from a side street.

Traffic and timing
Chilli arrivals peak from about January to April, and the roads around the mirchi yard are packed from early morning. Across town, traffic gathers at the Sankar Vilas bridge and the other railway crossings, and near the government hospital at office hours. Sankranti is the big festival: the city fills with visiting relatives, then empties as families head to their villages. Moves go best on a weekday before 9 am.

Weather and the months to plan around
Guntur's summers are among the hottest in the state, with May afternoons past 44°C and hot winds, so the crew loads early and eases off through the worst hours. The southwest monsoon brings moderate rain, and the heaviest falls often come with Bay of Bengal depressions in October and November, when low roads flood for a day. December to February, dry and pleasant, is the best time to move.

Can you move a chilli trader's house with a godown attached?
Yes. The house and the godown are surveyed together and quoted as separate loads, so each figure is clear. Household goods are packed and listed apart from stock, which travels with its own trade paperwork. If the godown holds chillies, say so, since the smell carries and we keep sofas and mattresses well away from it.
Is the chilli season a problem for moving?
Only near the yard. From about January to April the lorries and tractors bringing chillies fill the roads around it from early morning. If your house is close, we start at dawn and keep the truck on a road away from the queue. Elsewhere in Guntur the season makes little difference.
I have joined AIIMS Mangalagiri. Can you move me between Guntur and Mangalagiri?
Yes. Mangalagiri is about 20 km from Guntur on NH 16, so it is a local, one-day job in either direction. If the institute is paying for the move, we bill it directly, and a two-wheeler can come along in the same truck.
Our flat is on a narrow line in Brodipet. What size truck will come?
Usually a 14 ft truck, which fits most Brodipet lines once the parked two-wheelers are moved. Where the line is too tight, the truck stays at the corner and a tempo makes two or three runs to it. We look at the street on a video call before quoting, so the right vehicle turns up on the day.
