Khammam grew around a hill. The Khilla, a fort on a rocky height, looks over the old town, and the Narasimha temple on Stambhadri hill gave the town its name. Below them, Gandhi Chowk and the market streets are lined with jewellers, cloth shops and houses built one against the next. The city has since spread along its main roads, Wyra Road above all, into colonies of independent houses and newer apartment blocks, with NSP Colony built for irrigation staff and Khanapuram Haveli and Ballepalli on the growing edges.
Two trades set the city's rhythm. The market yard is one of the busiest in the state for red chillies and cotton, and from winter into spring its roads fill with tractors and lorries. Granite is the other, with quarries and polishing units around the city and slabs leaving on heavy trailers. Coal is not far away either. Singareni's mines at Kothagudem, Yellandu and Sathupalli and the power station at Paloncha send engineers and staff who keep a family home in Khammam.
Most Khammam homes are low, flat-roofed houses packed with solid furniture, so packing takes longer than driving. Government offices and the medical and engineering colleges bring transfers and students. Vijayawada is nearer than Hyderabad, and Khammam families move both ways: to Hyderabad for jobs, and to Vijayawada, Guntur and the Andhra towns where relatives live.

Gandhi Chowk to Khanapuram Haveli is about 5 km, and the far ends of Wyra Road and the Munneru side are under 10 km apart, so a 2 BHK move starts and finishes on the same day. Society and building rules
The newer apartment blocks have small associations that ask for notice, cleared maintenance and a daytime move, and tenants should have the owner's go-ahead. Most people live in independent houses, where settling the rent and the meter readings with the landlord is all that is needed. Singareni colonies and irrigation department quarters are inspected by their own staff before the keys are accepted back, and we load the day before that visit.

Where the truck can stand
Most colonies let a mid-size truck reach the gate. Gandhi Chowk and the streets below the fort do not. They are narrow and full of shoppers and parked two-wheelers from mid morning. The truck stays out by the nearest broad road, and a tempo makes the trips. Near the market yard in season, lorries leave little room, and in Prakash Nagar and other riverside colonies after heavy rain, a low road can stay under water for a day.

Traffic and timing
Traffic gathers at the bus stand, Gandhi Chowk and along Wyra Road at school and office hours. The chilli and cotton season, roughly December to April, crowds the roads around the market yard from early morning. Sri Rama Navami at Bhadrachalam sends pilgrims through the city, and Bathukamma evenings close roads near Lakaram tank. Outside the market's peak weeks, any weekday morning suits a move.

Weather and the months to plan around
Khammam summers are some of the harshest in Telangana, and a May afternoon here can top 44°C. Loading starts at dawn and the truck is closed before noon. The monsoon is heavier here than in the west of the state, with intense spells in July, August and September that can flood colonies along the Munneru. Cartons and furniture get a waterproof sheet inside their wrapping in those months, and riverside homes are given a flexible date. November to February is the comfortable stretch.

Yes. The lanes there will not take a truck once the shops open, so the crew starts early, carries heavy pieces down the stairs and loads a tempo that shuttles out to where the truck is waiting. A video call beforehand lets us see the stairs and the lane and price the extra trips in writing.
