Warangal is three towns grown into one. Warangal proper is the older, trading half, with the Kakatiya fort a few kilometres south and crowded streets around Mandi Bazar, Beat Bazar and Station Road. Hanamkonda, to the north west, is the administrative and residential side, home to the Thousand Pillar Temple, Kakatiya University and planned colonies such as Subedari, Balasamudram and Nakkalagutta. Kazipet, to the south west, grew around the railway junction and the NIT campus.
The typical Warangal home is an independent house of a floor or two, flat-roofed, with an outside staircase and a room upstairs let to a student or a young couple. Apartment blocks have risen along Hunter Road, in Nakkalagutta and near the Hanamkonda bus stand, and they bring lifts and associations with them. In Warangal's old streets the houses are narrow and deep. In the railway colonies and the NIT and university quarters, the move follows whatever date the estate office sets.
NIT Warangal, Kakatiya University, Kakatiya Medical College and the MGM hospital bring students, teachers and doctors, and the Kazipet junction and its loco sheds keep railway families arriving and leaving. The Enumamula market yard handles the district's cotton and chillies, the Kakatiya mega textile park is taking shape outside the city, and a small IT park at Madikonda employs graduates who once went straight to Hyderabad. Many still do, and the Hyderabad road remains the commonest way out.

Shops, clinics and apartment blocks packed around the junction. Parking vanishes from 10 am, so the truck is loaded early and moved off.

Established Hanamkonda colonies of houses and newer flats. Most gates here will take a 14 ft truck, though cars parked outside the hospitals squeeze the roads.

Mandi Bazar and Station Road

Only the newer apartment blocks in Hanamkonda have associations, and they generally want a few days' notice, the maintenance paid up and a daytime slot for the lift. Houses are simpler. Settle the rent and the electricity bill with the owner, who often lives downstairs, and agree the day with them. NIT, Kakatiya University and railway quarters have formal handovers, with an inspection and the keys handed back at the estate office, and the truck is booked for the day before.

Where the truck can stand
Hanamkonda's colonies and the Hunter Road side are easy, and a mid-size truck parks outside most houses. Warangal's old centre is not. Around Mandi Bazar, Beat Bazar and Pochamma Maidan the streets fill with lorries unloading grain and cloth, so the main truck parks on the nearest open road and a tempo runs between the door and the truck. Near the fort some lanes are too tight to turn in, and the crew carries the last stretch.

Traffic and timing
Traffic bunches at Hanamkonda Chowrasta, Kazipet junction, Pochamma Maidan and around Warangal station at school and office hours. The Enumamula yard fills with tractors from late autumn into spring, as the cotton and then the chillies arrive. Every two years, in January or February, the Sammakka Saralamma Jatara at Medaram sends lakhs of pilgrims through the city, and the Mulugu road jams for days. Bathukamma evenings at the tanks and Dasara crowds at the Bhadrakali temple close nearby streets. Early weekday mornings are easiest.

Weather and the months to plan around
Warangal gets some of the fiercest heat in Telangana. May afternoons often touch 45°C, so the crew works from 6 am to about 11 am, rests through the worst of it and finishes in the evening, and no television sits in a closed truck at noon. June to September brings heavy spells that have flooded low colonies in both Hanamkonda and Warangal, and every carton is covered against sudden rain. Dry, pleasant weather settles in by November and lasts into February.
