JNTU Kakinada, Rangaraya Medical College and a cluster of engineering colleges keep students and lecturers coming, and the city's quiet still draws retired couples back from bigger cities. Houses near the sea take a beating from salt and humidity: steel rusts, wooden furniture swells, and electronics corrode if left in damp cartons. Associations in the apartment blocks want the date in advance, nothing owing on maintenance and the lift used in daylight, and tenants should have written consent from the owner. Bungalows and independent houses deal only with the landlord. The fertiliser and oil company townships, port housing and government quarters run their own procedures, a gate pass for the vehicle, a handover inspection and the return of keys, and the loading is fixed around them.

Kakinada's planned roads make it one of the easier towns on the coast for a truck, and a 17 ft vehicle reaches most gates in Gandhinagar, Suryaraopeta and Sarpavaram. The narrower streets are in Jagannaickpur near the harbour, where fish lorries and autos fill the road in the morning, and around Main Road and Temple Street in shop hours. Township gates at Vakalapudi decide where the truck may stand.

Traffic and timing
Traffic in Kakinada is modest. It thickens around Main Road, the bus complex and Bhanugudi junction at school and office hours, and near the fishing harbour early in the morning. Sankranti is the big festival of the Godavari districts, with families gathering from everywhere, and the roads out of town are packed before and after it. Karthika month fills the beach at Uppada and the temples. A weekday morning is the simplest time.

The sea sets the weather here. Kakinada is damp in every month, and from April to June the heat is sticky, around 38°C to 40°C. The southwest monsoon brings steady rain, but the dangerous months are October to December, when cyclones from the Bay have crossed this coast more than once, bringing wind, storm surge and days of rain. We watch forecasts closely then, and January and February are the calmest months to move.

How do you protect furniture from the salt air on a move out of Kakinada?
Wood and upholstery get a moisture layer under the outer wrap, and steel almirahs and appliances are wiped dry before wrapping. Electronics go in cartons with moisture absorbers, and nothing is sealed in plastic while still damp.
