One Town, the old trading quarter by the hill, has narrow streets, wholesale shops and old family houses. Governorpet and Gandhinagar form the commercial centre, Patamata, Moghalrajpuram and Labbipet hold apartment blocks, and the city is spreading east along the Bandar and Eluru roads towards Poranki, Kanuru and the airport at Gannavaram.
Houses on the hills are a Vijayawada peculiarity. Whole neighbourhoods climb the rocky slopes above One Town, Gunadala and Chittinagar, reached by steps and footpaths that no vehicle uses, and moving a family out of one means carrying every piece down to the road. On level ground, most flats are in mid-rise blocks with a small lift, and One Town's older houses have thick walls and narrow stairs.
Trade and transport made the city. It is one of the busiest railway junctions in the south, a hub for lorry booking offices and the Autonagar workshops, and the base of the coaching colleges that draw students from across the state. Since the state government's offices moved across the river to Velagapudi and Amaravati, a good number of their staff have made Vijayawada home. Families leaving usually go to Hyderabad, or further to Bangalore and Chennai for work.

Apartment associations in Patamata, Benz Circle and Poranki want a note to the secretary, the maintenance settled and the lift booked for a daytime slot, and some take a deposit against damage. Tenants may need written approval from the owner. Houses in One Town and on the hills have no association, but neighbours share the steps and paths, so let them know when the crew will be carrying. Railway and government housing is returned after an inspection by the department.

Where the truck can stand
A 17 ft truck manages the arterial roads, though standing room near Benz Circle and on Eluru Road is scarce by day. One Town's streets are narrow and crowded with lorries loading for the wholesale trade, so a small vehicle does that stretch. Hillside homes have no road at all: the truck waits at the foot of the slope and the crew carries everything down the steps. The narrow roads beside the canals take only a light vehicle.

Traffic and timing
Dasara is the event to plan around. Through the nine nights of Navaratri, lakhs of devotees climb to the Kanaka Durga temple, and roads around Indrakeeladri, the Prakasam Barrage and One Town are closed or diverted. The Bhavani Deeksha weeks in December bring more crowds. Sankranti empties the city towards the villages and then fills the highways back. On ordinary weekdays, Benz Circle and Eluru Road are slowest at office hours, and a 7 am start stays ahead of them.

Weather and the months to plan around
Vijayawada summers are brutal. The bare rock around the city holds the heat, and May afternoons pass 44°C, sometimes 46°C, so loading begins early and electronics are never left in a hot truck. The southwest monsoon is moderate, but October and November can bring cyclone rain from the Bay, and a heavy spell can send the Budameru into the northern colonies. December to February is warm and dry, and the gentlest time to shift house here.

Yes. The truck stands at the foot of the hill and the crew carries everything down the steps. Almirahs and cots come apart first, and a fridge goes down upright on straps with three people on it. Should I avoid moving during Dasara?
If you live near Indrakeeladri, One Town or the Prakasam Barrage, yes. Through Navaratri the roads around the temple are shut or diverted and crowds fill them day and night. A move in Patamata or Poranki can still go ahead with an early start, and we check the festival dates when you book.
Our street floods when the Budameru rises. What if it rains on moving day?
We watch the forecast in the days before, and if the Budameru is rising we suggest a new date, since water on those roads can stay for days. On a wet day, furniture and cartons get a plastic layer under the wrap, mattresses are sealed, and the truck is loaded from the highest dry point nearby.
