Shifting homes across Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh runs almost 1,000 km along the Bay of Bengal, and most of its people live within reach of that coast. North coastal Andhra centres on Visakhapatnam, with its port, steel plant, naval command and growing IT offices. The Godavari districts around Rajahmundry and Kakinada are rice, aquaculture and gas country. Vijayawada and Guntur, on either side of the Krishna, form the commercial middle of the state, and the capital at Amaravati is being built between them.
South of Guntur the coast continues through Ongole to Nellore, with Krishnapatnam port and the factories of Sri City near the Tamil Nadu border. Inland, Rayalaseema is drier and more spread out. Tirupati is a temple town with IIT and IISER campuses, Kurnool and Kadapa are district towns with cement and mining, and the Kia plant at Penukonda has changed the Anantapur side. A move in the coastal cities is about humidity and apartments, and one in Rayalaseema is about heat, distance and independent houses.
Government and PSU postings keep people moving: the secretariat and departments around Vijayawada and Amaravati, the Eastern Naval Command and the steel plant at Visakhapatnam, ONGC in the Godavari basin, and the railways at Vijayawada and Guntur. Students go to Vijayawada and Guntur for coaching colleges, then on to Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai for jobs. Hyderabad, a few hours from much of the state, is where a large share of people leaving Andhra Pradesh end up.

Homes and buildings
Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada have apartment blocks of 5 to 15 floors, many in Vizag built on slopes, with gated towers rising at Madhurawada and along the Vijayawada-Guntur road. Navy, port and steel plant staff live in large townships such as Ukkunagaram, the steel township in Vizag. The Godavari towns, Guntur and Nellore are mostly independent houses of one to three floors, often with a family living upstairs. In Rayalaseema, flat-roofed houses on wide plots are usual, and Tirupati adds lodges, hostels and temple staff quarters.

Between cities
NH 16 is the backbone of the state, running the whole coast from Srikakulam through Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Vijayawada, Ongole and Nellore towards Chennai, mostly as a four or six lane road. NH 65 connects Vijayawada with Hyderabad, and NH 44 crosses Rayalaseema through Kurnool and Anantapur. The coastal plain is flat, and the long Godavari and Krishna bridges are the usual slow points. Inland, the Eastern Ghats rise behind Visakhapatnam towards Araku, and Tirumala sits above Tirupati on ghat roads with strict vehicle rules.

Moving into or out of Andhra Pradesh
Household goods do not need a special permit to enter Andhra Pradesh, and the rules are the national ones. A load of used personal belongings is carried on an itemised packing list with the owner's declaration, since e-way bills are meant for goods being sold or supplied. If your car will remain in the state beyond 12 months, get an NOC from the old RTO and register it here, or check whether your job makes you eligible for a BH series plate. Deliveries up the hill to Tirumala pass the TTD checkpoint at Alipiri, where vehicles are checked.

Weather and the months to plan around
The coast is humid all year and very hot from April to June, when Vijayawada and the Krishna delta can pass 45°C in May. Rain from the south-west monsoon between June and September is moderate here, and October to December is the season to watch. Cyclones form in the Bay of Bengal and can come ashore anywhere from Srikakulam to Nellore, as Hudhud did at Visakhapatnam in 2014, and the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain to Nellore and Tirupati in the same months. Sankranti in January sends families home to the Godavari districts. February and March are usually the calmest months.

We are moving from Vijayawada to Visakhapatnam. What is the road like?
It is about 350 km on NH 16, through Eluru and across the Godavari at Rajahmundry, a good highway for most of the way. The slow parts are the town stretches and the entry into Vizag. Many Vizag flats sit on slopes or up steep approach roads, so tell us about the building and the road outside at the survey.
Our move is to a navy or steel plant township in Visakhapatnam. What do we need?
A gate pass. The township or naval area wants the names and identity details of the crew and the truck number in advance, and entry is only in set hours. Keep the allotment letter handy for the quarter handover. If your employer pays for the move, the written quote and GST invoice can both name the organisation as the payer.
Is Sankranti a bad time to move in the Godavari districts?
It is a busy one. Families travel home to Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Bhimavaram and Eluru for Bhogi, Sankranti and Kanuma, buses and trains are full, and many workers take leave. A local move is still possible but harder to arrange at short notice. Plan around the middle of January, or book well ahead.
Does coastal humidity damage furniture during a move?
It can. Wood swells, mattresses and sofas pick up damp, and metal fittings rust if goods sit wrapped in plastic for days. For coastal moves, wooden furniture gets a layer that breathes under the outer wrap, electronics are sealed in bubble wrap and cartons, and nothing is left in a closed truck longer than it has to be.
