Work here is in government, education and farming. BLDE's medical college, Al-Ameen, the women's university and the engineering colleges bring students and teachers, and the district offices bring transfers. Grapes, lemons and sugarcane keep traders and factory staff busy, and the NTPC plant at Kudgi and the Almatti dam bring engineers. Many young people leave for Bangalore, or for Solapur, Mumbai and the other Maharashtra cities just across the state line.

The old city inside the walls

Near the Gol Gumbaz, tourist buses and autos take the road space, and loading is kept to the early morning.

Traffic in Vijayapura is modest, but it bunches near the Gol Gumbaz, the central bus stand and the markets from mid morning, and school and college hours add to it.
