Sangli was the seat of the Patwardhan rulers, and the old town still clusters round the Ganpati temple on the bank of the Krishna. Gaonbhag, Khanbhag and the streets around Rajwada Chowk are older two storey houses with shops beneath and narrow lanes between. The newer city has spread along the Sangli Miraj road through Vishrambag and Vijaynagar, with bungalows, row houses and apartment buildings of four to seven storeys.
The Market Yard is one of the largest turmeric markets in Asia, and the trade in turmeric, jaggery and Tasgaon raisins supports a lot of families here, along with the sugar factories and the Kupwad MIDC. Walchand College of Engineering and Willingdon College bring students from across the state, and the district offices bring government transfers. Households tied to the trade tend to be large and settled, and a move out of one can mean clearing three generations of furniture.
The river is what makes Sangli different to plan for. The Krishna floods after heavy rain upstream, when the Koyna and the other dams release water, and in the worst years, 2019 among them, it has come well into the city. People in the low-lying parts watch the level at the Irwin bridge through July and August, and so do we when a move falls in those weeks. The rest of the year the city is easy to work in.

Apartment societies in Sangli are mostly small and informal. Often the secretary only needs the date, while some ask for a written note and the maintenance account settled before a tenant leaves. Newer buildings in Vishrambag and Vijaynagar may keep shifting to daytime and ask for the lift to be booked. In the old town there is no society at all, but neighbours on a shared stair or lane appreciate a day's warning before a crew arrives.

Where the truck can stand
The newer parts of Sangli take a full-size truck easily. The old town does not. Gaonbhag, Khanbhag and the lanes round Ganpati Peth are narrow and crowded, so the truck is left outside the old town and a tempo makes repeated short trips. Around the Market Yard in the turmeric season the approach roads are lined with loaded trucks and tractors, so we come early in the day. Traffic and timing
The Sangli Miraj road, Rajwada Chowk and the roads into the Market Yard are the slow stretches, worst in the late morning and early evening. Turmeric arrivals in the first months of the year put extra heavy vehicles on the roads around the yard. During the Ganesh festival the old town around the Ganpati temple is crowded for days, and immersion processions close the roads to the river. Weekday mornings are the easiest time to load.

Weather and the months to plan around
Sangli itself sits in a dry belt with modest rain, and the summer is hot, with April and May near 40°C. The danger in the monsoon comes from upstream: heavy rain in the ghats and releases from the dams can bring the Krishna up fast, and the low parts of the city have gone under water more than once. If a move falls between late July and early September, keep the date flexible. November to February is the easiest time.

Should I avoid moving in Sangli during the flood season?
Only the low-lying parts near the river really need to plan around it. If you live in Gaonbhag, Khanbhag or another area that has flooded before, avoid a date in late July or August if you can, or keep a second date ready. We check the river level and the roads the day before and tell you if we think the move should wait.
I am a student at Walchand College. Can you move a single room?
Yes. Cartons, a bed, a desk and a cycle or bike from a hostel room or a Vishrambag flat make a small job. Going to another city, the load may be able to share a truck with other goods, which is cheaper and slower, though whether one is running on your date cannot be promised. The weeks at the end of a semester book up, so give us a few days' notice.
We live in the old town near the Ganpati temple. How do you get the goods out?
The lanes there are too narrow for a truck, so it is left at the nearest point where the road widens and a tempo makes several short trips to it. Heavy furniture is dismantled inside. Avoid the Ganesh festival, when the area around the temple is packed with people and vehicles are kept away.
Can you move us between Sangli and Miraj?
