Shifting homes in Solapur
Solapur was built on cotton. Its mills made it one of the big textile cities of the old Bombay Presidency, and although most of the mills have closed, the looms have not: Solapur chaddars and terry towels still come off powerlooms and handlooms across the city, and beedi rolling gives work to many women at home. The old peths are dense lanes of two storey houses, many with a loom or a workroom inside, where Marathi, Kannada and Telugu are all spoken.
The newer city has grown along Hotgi Road, Vijapur Road and in Jule Solapur, with bungalows, row houses and mid-rise apartment buildings. Solapur is also the headquarters of a Central Railway division, so there are large railway colonies and a steady flow of railway transfers. The NTPC plant, the university and the MIDC estates on Akkalkot Road and at Chincholi bring engineers and staff from across the country.
A move in the old peths means narrow lanes and steep stairs, and often a loom or workbench that has to be worked around. A move on Hotgi Road or in Jule Solapur is an ordinary apartment job, with a lift and a society to inform. Railway quarters have their own rules for handover. Apartment societies on Hotgi Road, Vijapur Road and in Jule Solapur usually want a note to the secretary a few days ahead, and some want the maintenance cleared and the lift booked for a set time. Tenants may need a letter from the owner. Railway quarters go back to the department on a fixed date, with an inspection of the quarter, so the packing has to be finished in time for it.

Where the truck can stand
On the main roads and in the newer colonies a full-size truck can stand outside. The old peths are different. Lanes are narrow, often with a loom working in a ground floor room, and a truck cannot get in, so it is left on the main road and a tempo makes the short trips. Around Navi Peth and the station, parking is scarce all day. Early morning gives the most room anywhere in the city.

Traffic and timing
Saat Rasta, Navi Peth, the station road and the Vijapur Road junctions are the slow points, busiest from late morning into the evening, and large goods vehicles are kept out of the centre during the busy hours. In January the Siddheshwar yatra, around Makar Sankranti, fills the area around the temple and the fort for days, with processions that close roads. Avoid those dates for a move near the centre. Early mornings are best, especially in summer.

Weather and the months to plan around
Few cities in Maharashtra get as hot as Solapur. April and May often reach 42°C, the afternoons are too hot for heavy carrying, and a television left in a shut truck at 2 pm is at risk, so we load from dawn and stop through the worst hours. The monsoon is light and irregular, though a sudden downpour can leave underpasses and low-lying roads under water until it drains. November to February, dry and mild, is the easiest time.

I am being transferred out of the Solapur railway division. Can you work to my relieving date?

If you live near the temple, the fort or the city centre, yes. During the yatra in January the area is packed for several days and processions close the roads, so a truck cannot get near. In Jule Solapur, Hotgi Road and the outer colonies it makes little difference beyond some extra traffic.
