Gulbarga is the largest city in the Kalyana Karnataka region and its centre for administration, health care and higher education. Gulbarga University, the Central University of Karnataka at Kadaganchi, GIMS, the ESIC and private medical colleges and the High Court bench bring staff and students. Around it, the cement plants at Wadi, Sedam and Malkhed and the dal mills that process the district's toor crop employ engineers and workers, and trade runs through the markets of the old town.
The old town grew around the fort, with shops and houses packed close together in Shahabazar, Mominpura and the streets towards the dargah. Newer Gulbarga spread out along the main roads, with colonies on the Sedam Road, Aland Road, Jewargi Road and the ring road, made up of independent houses, some apartment blocks and government quarters. Most homes are one or two storey houses with a flat terrace on top.

Lanes in Shahabazar and Mominpura are too narrow for a truck and lined with shops. A pickup comes in early, and the crew carries goods down tight stairs.

There are few housing societies in Gulbarga, so the formalities are light. Landlords want the rent and electricity settled and the keys handed over, and in apartment blocks the secretary likes a few days' notice. Government, bank and railway quarters have their own vacating rules and an inspection before the keys go back, and the loading day is fitted in before it. University quarters and hostels give fixed dates at the end of term.

Where the truck can stand
Outside the old town the roads are wide, and a 17 ft truck usually reaches the gate. The old lanes around the fort, Shahabazar and Mominpura are narrow, busy and in places blocked by parked two-wheelers, so a smaller vehicle carries the load out to where the truck can wait. Around the Super Market a truck cannot stand for long during the day, and the loading is timed for early morning.

Traffic and timing
The Urs at the Khwaja Bande Nawaz dargah draws very large crowds and closes the roads around it for several days, and the Sharana Basaveshwara fair does the same near the temple. Traffic is heavy around the Super Market, Jagat Circle and the station through the day. In summer the useful hours are from 6 am to about 11 am and after 5 pm, and a move is split around the afternoon heat.

Weather and the months to plan around
Gulbarga has one of the hottest summers in the state, with April and May afternoons that often pass 42°C.
