Miraj is a railway town and a hospital town. Its junction joins the lines to Kolhapur, to Belgaum and Goa, and to Pandharpur, and the railway colony near the station houses a large community of railway staff. The Government Medical College, the Wanless Hospital and a long list of private hospitals have made Miraj the place people from south Maharashtra and north Karnataka come for treatment. Around them are doctors' bungalows, nurses' rented flats and lodges for patients' families.
Near the fort and the dargah the town is older and tighter, with narrow lanes of houses and workshops. Miraj has made sitars and tanpuras for generations, and instrument makers still work in these lanes. Every year the Urs at the dargah of Khwaja Shamna Mira brings musicians and large crowds into the old town. Newer colonies of bungalows and apartment buildings have grown along the Sangli Miraj road and on the edges of town.

Railway housing is vacated on the date the department gives, and an inspector checks the quarter before the keys go back, so the packing must be over by then. Hospital housing and hostels work through the hospital's administration. Apartment societies along the Sangli Miraj road expect a letter to the secretary and dues cleared, and some want the owner's consent for a tenant. In the old town, give neighbours on shared stairs a day's warning.

Where the truck can stand
Around the station and the hospitals, parking is scarce and ambulances need the road, so the truck loads early and quickly, and never across a hospital gate. In the old town lanes near the fort a truck cannot get in, so it waits on a main road while a tempo shuttles. Along the Sangli Miraj road and in the newer colonies there is room for a full-size truck at most gates.

Traffic and timing
The roads around the hospitals and the station are busy from morning to late evening, and the market streets from mid-morning, so early starts are best. The Urs at the dargah brings large crowds into the old town for several days, and the Ganesh festival closes some roads in the evenings. Railway transfers cluster around the school year, which fills a few weeks in May and June.

Weather and the months to plan around
Miraj is hot and fairly dry. April and May reach about 40°C, so loading starts at dawn. The monsoon is modest here, but the Krishna flows just outside the town and rises after heavy rain in the ghats upstream, and in bad flood years the low areas near the river and the roads that cross it have been hit. Anyone moving in late July or August should keep a second date. November to February is easiest.
