The loom lanes are the difficult part. They are narrow, a yarn tempo may be unloading at any hour, and parked two-wheelers fill every gap, so the main truck is left where the lane meets a proper road and the crew walks or ferries everything out to it. In Shahapur and Kabnoor it depends on the street. Korochi, Tardal and the newer colonies usually have room at the gate, apart from a few unpaved approaches in the rain.

The looms run in shifts, so the lanes carry traffic at most hours, with the heaviest movement of yarn and cloth in the daytime. Early morning is the quietest time to load in the old town. The main roads through the centre are slowest in the evening. Ichalkaranji gets a moderate monsoon from June to September, lighter than Kolhapur's. The Panchganga runs along the town, though, and after heavy rain upstream it rises, and in bad flood years it has come into the lowest parts of town. Damp in those months softens cartons and swells wooden doors, so packing gets a plastic layer. April and May are hot, reaching about 38°C. Our home is above a loom shed with an outside staircase. How will you move the furniture?
Upstairs, the beds, cupboards and dining table are unbolted, carried down the outside stair in pieces and refitted at the new home. Let the loom workers know the date, since the doorway and the lane need to be clear for a few hours.
