Shifting homes in Belgaum
Belgaum is really two towns side by side. The army's part, the Camp, is laid out with wide roads, old bungalows and the Maratha Light Infantry's regimental centre, and the military training establishments bring postings all year. The civilian city has old gallis around Khade Bazar and Ganpat Galli, the handloom lanes of Shahapur and Vadgaon, and the newer layouts of Tilakwadi, Sadashiv Nagar, Hindwadi and Mahantesh Nagar, where families live in independent houses and small apartment blocks.
Houses in the old city are joined wall to wall, with steep inside stairs and upper rooms reached through low doors, so large furniture comes apart before it can go anywhere. The layouts are easier, with a gate and a staircase. In the Camp the bungalows are large and the quarters are formal: a move there is cleared with the station authorities, and the posting order sets the date.
Outside the army, jobs come from the foundries and machine shops of Udyambag and Machhe, the Hindalco aluminium plant, KLE's hospital and medical college, and Visvesvaraya Technological University, whose campus is at Machhe. Belgaum speaks Marathi and Kannada and sits on the border, so moves across to Kolhapur and Goa come up often. Students and young engineers head to Bangalore and the Maharashtra cities for jobs.

Belgaum is a compact city. The Camp to Tilakwadi is about 4 km and Shahapur to Sadashiv Nagar about 6 km, so moves inside it are short drives and a 2 BHK rarely spills past one day. The drive only slows around Khade Bazar and the old city, and on the Kolhapur road at office hours. Two things add a day: a big old house in the gallis with a long carry, and a posting move that has to wait for the quarters inspection.

Khade Bazar and the old city gallis
The market streets around Khade Bazar, Ganpat Galli and Maruti Galli, crowded from 10 am. Loading starts early, and goods are carried out to a vehicle at the corner.
Sadashiv Nagar and Nehru Nagar
Planned layouts near the KLE hospital, with apartment blocks, doctors' homes and student rooms. Hospital traffic makes the main roads slow at midday.
Udyambag and the Khanapur road
The industrial belt to the south, with staff housing and newer colonies along the road. Wide roads, and heavy truck traffic at shift changes.

Society and building rules
Apartment blocks in Tilakwadi and Sadashiv Nagar want the secretary informed, dues paid and a daytime slot for the lift where there is one. Tenants should speak to the owner first, since some buildings check with them before letting furniture out. Army and air force quarters follow their own drill: the vehicle and crew are cleared at the gate, the quarters are inspected before you hand over, and a broken fitting can hold up the clearance, so we load a day before the inspection.

Where the truck can stand
Tilakwadi, Hindwadi, the Camp and the newer layouts take a 14 or 17 ft truck without trouble. The gallis of the old city and the lanes of Shahapur do not, being narrow, crowded and in places one-way, so the truck is parked on whichever main road is closest and a pickup makes the runs. In the Camp the truck parks wherever the gate staff direct, which may be some way from the door, and the crew carries from there.

Traffic and timing
Ganeshotsav is the biggest event of Belgaum's year, with a great many public mandals, and the immersion procession runs through the old city for a night and much of the next day, closing most central roads. Shivaji Jayanti processions do the same on a smaller scale. When the state legislature holds its winter session at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, traffic near Halaga and on the highway gets heavy. Otherwise, the old market is busiest from late morning, and an early start avoids most of it.

Weather and the months to plan around
Belgaum sits at about 750 m, close to the Western Ghats, and gets far more rain than the plains to its east. From June to September the drizzle can go on for days, roads in the older parts collect water, and houses turn damp, so wood, books and leather are packed with a moisture layer. Summers are mild for north Karnataka, rarely much above 35°C. October to February is cool and dry, and that is when a move here goes most smoothly.

Do you handle army postings out of Belgaum Camp?

The furniture is taken apart in the rooms, carried down by hand and put on a pickup in the lane, which runs it out to the main truck. It takes longer than a house in the layouts, and the quote says so. We ask the neighbours for a morning's patience and try to be done before the lanes fill.
Can you get us to Kolhapur or Goa within a day?
Usually, yes. Both are between 110 and 140 km, so a household loaded in the morning normally reaches the new home that evening. The road to Goa goes down a ghat, which is slower in the monsoon, and the delivery window allows for it. For Kolhapur, what needs planning is the new address, whether an old city lane or a society with fixed hours.
