Shifting homes in Udaipur
Udaipur is built around its lakes, and the Aravalli hills come right down to them. The old city on the east bank of Lake Pichola is a web of steep lanes around the City Palace and the Jagdish Temple, lined with old havelis, many of them now guest houses. Around Fateh Sagar and Ambamata, houses climb the slopes. The planned city spreads south-east and north of the lakes: the Hiran Magri sectors, Pratap Nagar, and newer flats and villas at Shobhagpura, Bhuwana and Sukher.
That mix decides the move. In Hiran Magri the truck parks outside an independent house and the day is straightforward. On a slope near Fateh Sagar the road may be steep and narrow, so a smaller vehicle does the climb. In the old city the approach is through lanes full of tourists, cows and two-wheelers, and an early start is the only way to load without blocking them. Apartment blocks in Shobhagpura have lifts and a society office to deal with.
Hindustan Zinc has its head office in Udaipur, with the Debari smelter and the Zawar mines nearby. The hotels and resorts employ a large staff, and the city has IIM Udaipur, Mohanlal Sukhadia University, several medical colleges and the marble trade. People leave for Ahmedabad, the nearest big city, and for Jaipur, Mumbai and Delhi, and families posted to the mines and plants move in and out on company transfers.

Old city near Jagdish Temple and Gangaur Ghat

Newer colonies, villas and flats on the northern side near the highway, with room for a full-size truck and a quick way out of the city.
Pratap Nagar
Colonies on the east side towards the airport at Dabok, with good roads and space at the gate, and heavy traffic at the Pratap Nagar crossing in the evening.

Society and building rules
Societies in Shobhagpura, Bhuwana and along 100 Feet Road want a note to the office, clear maintenance dues and a lift booking, and some keep shifting to daytime. If you rent a floor in a family house, which is common in Hiran Magri, agree the day with the owner and settle the bills before the truck comes. Haveli guest houses and small hotels in the old city need moving around their guests, so the owner decides the hours and we work to them.

Where the truck can stand
Outside the old city a full-size truck reaches most homes. Inside it, the lanes near the Jagdish Temple and Gangaur Ghat are steep and barely wide enough for an auto, so the main truck stays near a gate and a smaller vehicle or handcart makes the trips. Slopes around Ambamata and the hill colonies have tight bends where a long truck cannot turn. The Hiran Magri sectors have space, although parked cars and wandering cattle can hold up the unloading.

Traffic and timing
Udaipur's traffic follows the tourists. From October to March the lake roads, Chetak Circle, Delhi Gate and the old city are crowded from mid-morning, and destination weddings close hotel approaches in the winter season. Goods vehicles have limited hours on the main city roads. The Jagannath Rath Yatra from the Jagdish Temple and the Hariyali Amavasya fair at Fateh Sagar each block roads for a day or two. Early mornings are the easiest time in any season.

Weather and the months to plan around
Udaipur is milder than western Rajasthan. April to June afternoons reach 40°C or a little more, so loading starts early. The monsoon, July to September, brings more rain than most of the state, the lakes fill, and hill roads and old city steps turn slippery, so we lay plastic under the outer wrap and take the slopes slowly. November to February is cool and dry but also peak tourist season, and late February and March are often the easiest weeks.

Can you shift a home in the old city near the Jagdish Temple?
Yes. The lane is checked on a video call first, and on the day we start before the shops and tourists fill it. A smaller vehicle or a handcart brings the goods to the truck near the nearest gate, and big pieces are taken apart in the house for the stairs. It takes a few hours more than a colony move, but a normal home still finishes in a day.
Our house is on a hill road near Fateh Sagar. Can a truck get up there?
Sometimes. A full-size truck needs room to turn, and some slopes around Ambamata and the lake have bends it cannot take. Then a smaller vehicle does the climb and meets the truck down on the lake road. The survey looks at the gradient and the turns, so the vehicle plan is written into the quote.
Will a move to Ahmedabad fit in one day?
Usually, yes. Ahmedabad is about 260 km down NH 48, so a 2 BHK packed in the morning is unloaded that night or early the next day. Ask your new society in Ahmedabad about its shifting hours before you fix the date, because many there allow moves only in daytime and a truck arriving late may have to wait for morning.
Is the monsoon a bad time to move in Udaipur?
It is workable. July to September brings more rain than most of Rajasthan, so cartons get a plastic layer, mattresses and sofas are covered fully, and we avoid carrying down wet old city steps in a downpour. The bigger clash in Udaipur is the tourist season from October, when the lake roads are crowded, so early monsoon and March both suit a move.
