Shifting homes in Jodhpur
Jodhpur is really two cities. The old one, founded in 1459 below Mehrangarh, is a maze of stepped lanes, blue-washed houses and bazaars around the Clock Tower and Sardar Market, entered through gates such as Jalori Gate, Sojati Gate and Nagauri Gate. The newer city spreads out beyond the walls: Sardarpura and Shastri Nagar on a planned grid, Ratanada and Paota, the Chopasani and Kudi Bhagtasni housing board colonies, and apartment blocks going up along Pal Road.
Houses here are built of the local red sandstone, with thick walls, stone stairs and flat roofs that serve as an extra room in winter. Furniture tends to be heavy, and in a city that makes and exports carved sheesham and mango wood pieces, many homes hold more of it than the rooms suggest. In the old city a vehicle often cannot reach the door at all, so the crew carries the load down stepped lanes to a point where a small tempo can stand.
The defence presence is large: the Air Force station by the airport, the Army's 12 Corps and the BSF's Rajasthan Frontier headquarters, which together mean a steady flow of posting moves with fixed dates. Brahmpuri and Navchokiya
The blue houses on the slope below Mehrangarh sit on stepped lanes that no vehicle climbs. Everything is carried to the nearest road by hand.
Sardarpura and Shastri Nagar
Planned residential grid with wide roads and bungalows. Parking is easy, and the hours go on heavy furniture and well-stocked roof rooms.
Chopasani Housing Board and Pal Road
Sector houses of the housing board, and newer apartment blocks along Pal Road, where a small lift often means beds come apart before they go in.
Ratanada and the air force area
Defence housing near the airport. The vehicle and crew need an entry pass arranged in advance, and the quarters are handed back on a set date.

Society and building rules
Jodhpur has few large societies, so most moves involve a landlord and not a facility office. Clear the rent and the power and water bills, return the keys, and have the landlord check the house while the crew is still there. The newer apartment blocks on Pal Road and near the bypass are the exception, with a society office, a lift that may need booking and sometimes a rule about shifting hours. Defence quarters have their own vacating procedure, and we plan the loading around it.

Where the truck can stand
Most of the newer city is easy for a truck. The old city is not. Inside the walls a full-size truck will not pass most gates, and the lanes of Brahmpuri and Navchokiya are steps as much as road, so the truck waits outside Jalori Gate, Sojati Gate or near the Clock Tower while the crew brings loads out on foot or by handcart. The Chopasani and Kudi housing board sectors are fine, though cars parked on both sides can push the truck to the end of the lane.

Traffic and timing
The slow points are Jalori Gate, Sojati Gate, Paota and the roads around the railway station and Sardar Market, all at their worst in the evening. Heavy vehicles are held off the city's main roads for much of the day, so we load early and leave the old city before the shops open. In spring the Dhinga Gavar night fills the old city lanes with crowds, and Diwali shopping and the winter wedding season crowd Sardarpura and the markets.

Weather and the months to plan around
Jodhpur's summer runs from April to June, with May and June afternoons often at 45°C and hot winds from late morning. Loading starts at first light and pauses through the worst hours, and sealed cartons keep out the fine dust that comes with the evening storms. The monsoon, July and August, is short and light in most years, though a heavy spell can flood the low roads for a day. December and January nights are cold and the days mild, and a date between November and February makes the move far easier.

Yes, though it is mostly carrying. The lanes in Brahmpuri and Navchokiya are stepped and narrow, so heavy pieces are taken apart inside and carried down to the nearest road, where a small tempo takes them to the truck waiting outside the walls. We look at the route on a video call first, count the steps and send enough people for it.
I am posted out of the Air Force station or 12 Corps. What do you need from me?
The date the quarters must be vacated, your new station and joining date, and whatever your unit needs for an entry pass, which we send ahead with the truck number and crew names. Your claim papers, meaning the itemised inventory and a GST invoice, follow whatever format the unit asks for. The load travels under a consignment number, and any car travels on its own carrier.
How do you pack carved sheesham and mango wood furniture?
Carved pieces get bubble wrap where the carving stands proud, then blankets or corrugated sheet, and they travel upright against the truck wall. Tables and beds come apart where they are built to. Inlaid or very old pieces can go in a wooden crate, which costs extra, and we tell you at the survey which pieces we think need one.
I am joining IIT Jodhpur. Is Karwar a local move from the city?
Yes. The campus is a little over 20 km from the centre on the Nagaur road, so it is planned as a move within Jodhpur and done in a day. Campus housing has its own gate, so share the entry rules and your allotment letter before the date, and the truck's number and our crew list reach the gate ahead of us.
