Shifting homes in Bhilwara
Bhilwara is Rajasthan's textile town. Spinning and weaving mills, processing houses and suiting brands ring it, from the industrial areas on the edge of town to the growth centre at Hamirgarh on the Chittorgarh road. The town itself is mostly independent houses: older homes in and around the bazaar, planned colonies such as Shastri Nagar, RC Vyas Colony and Azad Nagar, and newer plots spreading towards Pur.
Mill families tend to live in company colonies or rented houses near the plants, and their moves come with a transfer letter and a date. Trading families have bigger houses, often three generations of furniture, and sometimes a shop or office with fabric samples to move at the same time. Most homes have a truck at the door, and the careful part is the packing: glass-fronted cabinets, heavy beds and a kitchen that has not been emptied in years.

Distances are short. RC Vyas Colony to Shastri Nagar is a few kilometres, Pur about 10 km from the centre and Hamirgarh around 18 km. A 2 BHK is usually packed and unloaded well within a day, and a large family house takes the full day. The slow parts are the old bazaar lanes, the shift change traffic near the mills and a house full of heavy furniture.

The old town and bazaar
Busy shop lanes where a truck cannot turn. A small vehicle takes goods to the main road, and loading happens before the shops open.
Pur and the Pur road
An old town now joined to Bhilwara, with narrow lanes in its core and new plots along the road. The approach decides the vehicle.
Mill belt and Hamirgarh

Society and building rules
Very few Bhilwara homes have a society office, so the arrangements are with a landlord or the company. A landlord will want rent and electricity settled and a look around the empty house before the keys go back. Mill colonies and company flats have an HR or estate process: a no-dues form, the quarter handed over on a fixed date, and a gate pass for the truck. Tell us that date at the start and the packing is planned around it.

Where the truck can stand
Most colonies take a full-size truck to the door, and many houses have a gate wide enough to back in. The old bazaar and the core of Pur are the exceptions, with lanes too narrow and too busy for a truck once shops open, so a small vehicle shuttles. Around the mills the roads are wide but carry heavy trucks, and ours may have to wait for a gap to park. Company colonies have guards who check the pass.

Traffic and timing
The bazaars get busy from late morning until night, and the roads near the mills fill at shift change. Heavy goods vehicles have set hours on the town roads, so we load early and leave before the afternoon. On Sheetla Saptami, a week after Holi, the town's well-known procession takes over the bazaar roads for the day. Diwali and the wedding season also crowd the markets, while weekday mornings outside those weeks are easy.

Weather and the months to plan around
Bhilwara's summer is hot and dry, with May and June afternoons at 42°C to 44°C, and loading begins early and breaks off for the worst of the heat. The monsoon from July to September brings moderate rain, enough to flood low roads for a few hours and to make packing a wet-weather job. Winters are mild with cool nights, and a move between October and February is the simplest to plan.

My mill is transferring me to another plant. Can the paperwork be in the company's name?

Can you move a trader's office and fabric samples along with the house?

Bolts of cloth and sample books go in cartons, and anything heavy or bulky is noted at the survey. If the shop and the house go to different addresses, the unloading is planned as two stops.

Surat is about 680 km by road through Udaipur and Ahmedabad, so after packing the load spends two days or so on the highway. It carries a consignment number, and we keep you posted until it arrives. Yes, for the old town and the bazaar roads. The procession on Sheetla Saptami, a week after Holi, fills those streets for most of the day, and no truck gets through. Moves in the colonies can still go ahead, but it is simpler to pick a day or two either side.
