Shifting homes across Rajasthan
Rajasthan is India's largest state by area, and the distances show in any move that crosses it. The Aravalli hills run from near Alwar down past Ajmer to Udaipur and divide it roughly in two. East of them are Jaipur, Alwar, Bharatpur, Kota and Bhilwara, greener and more crowded. West of them the Thar begins, with Jodhpur, Pali, Bikaner and Jaisalmer, long straight roads and few towns in between, and Jaisalmer is more than 550 km from Jaipur. Sikar and the Shekhawati towns sit on the edge of the sand, north of the capital.
The cities carry their history in their housing. Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Bikaner and Jaisalmer all have old walled quarters of havelis and narrow lanes that no truck can enter, and moving a family out of one takes a smaller vehicle, extra hands and time. Around them are newer colonies of independent houses, mostly two storeys with a roof terrace, and in Jaipur and Kota a growing number of apartment towers. Cantonments at Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Alwar and Kota add a steady flow of army and air force postings, each with a gate to clear.
People come for government work in Jaipur, for IT and industry at Mahindra World City and the Neemrana and Bhiwadi estates towards the Haryana border, for Hindustan Zinc and marble around Udaipur, and for the textile mills of Bhilwara and Pali. Kota draws students from across north India to its coaching institutes, and they arrive and leave with the academic year. Tourism keeps hotels and their staff moving in Udaipur, Jaisalmer and Jaipur. Homes and buildings
Independent houses are the usual home across Rajasthan, built in local stone or brick with flat roofs, terraces and thick walls against the heat. Jaisalmer builds in golden sandstone, the old quarter of Jodhpur below Mehrangarh is painted blue, and Jaipur's walled city is pink plaster over courtyard havelis. Newer JDA and housing board colonies, Mansarovar and Malviya Nagar in Jaipur among them, are laid out on wide roads. Apartment towers are common only in Jaipur, Kota and Udaipur, and Kota also has streets of hostels and paying guest rooms around its coaching areas.

Between cities
NH 48 is the spine of the east, running from the Haryana border past Jaipur and Kishangarh towards Udaipur, and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway now cuts south past Dausa towards Kota. From Jaipur, roads fan out to Sikar and on to Bikaner, to Jodhpur through Ajmer, and to Kota through Tonk. In the west the roads are long, straight and quiet, and the slow parts are the town centres. The Aravalli sections near Udaipur climb and bend, and loaded trucks crawl on them. After dark, cattle and camel carts on rural roads mean a truck keeps its speed down.

Moving into or out of Rajasthan
Personal household goods are not a sale, so a move into or out of Rajasthan travels on an inventory and a signed self-declaration, and an e-way bill is not normally asked for. Cars are different. One that will be kept in another state beyond 12 months needs registering afresh in that state, which means first getting an NOC from the Rajasthan RTO that issued its RJ number. Defence personnel, government staff and employees of firms present in four or more states can ask for a BH series number, which moves with them. Army and air force addresses need gate entry arranged in advance, with the truck and crew details.

Weather and the months to plan around
Heat shapes a Rajasthan move more than anything else. From April to June the west passes 45°C, Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Barmer can go higher still, and dust storms blow up in the afternoons, so loading is kept to the early morning or the evening. The monsoon, July to September, is light in the Thar and heavier in Kota, Udaipur and the south-east, where low roads can flood for a few hours. Winter nights in Sikar, Churu and Bikaner fall close to freezing. October to March is the comfortable stretch, with tourist traffic heaviest from November to February.

Our house is inside Jaipur's walled city. How will the move work?
The main truck waits on a wide road outside the walls, near one of the gates, and a smaller vehicle or a handcart shuttles through the bazaars to the house. Havelis often have steep, narrow stairs and heavy old wooden furniture, so pieces are taken apart where they allow it and extra hands are sent for the carry. The bazaars get crowded as the day goes on, so the loading starts early.
Can we move in the desert districts in May or June?
Yes, with the day planned round the heat. Packing starts at first light, loading finishes before the afternoon, when a closed truck gets hot enough to harm electronics and medicines, and the crew rests through the worst hours. Afternoon dust storms can stop work for a while, so anything waiting outside is covered. If the date can move, October to March is easier on people and goods.
Our son is moving to Kota for coaching. Can you move a student's room?
Yes. A student's load, usually a few cartons, a study table, a cooler and perhaps a bicycle, can go on its own small vehicle. If a part load happens to be going your way we can look into it, though that cannot be promised. Sessions start around April to June, and those weeks are the busiest in hostel areas such as Talwandi, Rajeev Gandhi Nagar and Landmark City, so book early.
How long does a move from Jaipur to Jodhpur or Jaisalmer take?
Jodhpur is about 340 km, a day's drive, so a household packed in Jaipur one day is usually unloaded in Jodhpur the next. Jaisalmer is about 560 km across the desert, a full day on the road with few stops, and delivery normally falls on the second or third day. The truck leaves early to cover the open stretches before the heat.
