Himatnagar sits on the Hathmati river where NH 48, the Ahmedabad to Udaipur highway, runs through it. It is a district town of housing societies, with bungalows and tenements on plots, a few apartment blocks on the main roads, and an older centre with a bazaar and closely built houses. It has grown steadily towards Motipura, Mahavirnagar and the highway.
The town lives on farm trade and government. The market yard handles the district's cotton, wheat and groundnut, Sabar Dairy collects milk from villages across Sabarkantha, and as district headquarters Himatnagar has the collectorate, the courts, the civil hospital and the GMERS medical college. Officers, bank staff and doctors are posted here and move on after a few years.
