Ratlam is a railway town first. The junction sits on the Delhi to Mumbai main line, and the Western Railway's Ratlam division is run from here, with large colonies of quarters around the station and the yards. The old city is a trading town known across the region for its gold and its sev, with the sarafa and Chandni Chowk at its centre and houses built close together behind the shops. Beyond them, newer colonies of houses on plots, with the odd apartment block, have spread out in every direction.
Railway quarters make up a big share of the housing, and leaving one comes with a process: an inspection, a handover to the railway's staff and a date that the next occupant is waiting on. The blocks are two or three storeys with shared stairs. Houses in the old city are tall and narrow, and the lanes around the sarafa fill early. The newer colonies on the edges are houses on plots, easy for a truck and full of heavy furniture.
Beyond the railway, Ratlam has the government medical college, the district and court offices, and industry, including a large pharmaceutical plant. The Delhi Mumbai Expressway now passes through the district, and the Gujarat border is a short drive away. People leave for Indore and Ujjain, for the cities of Gujarat and for Mumbai, while railway families go wherever the transfer takes them along the line.

The railway colonies are a couple of kilometres from Chandni Chowk, and the colonies on the edges lie within 6 or 7 km of the station, so shifting within Ratlam takes a day at most, and often less. What slows it is the old market in shop hours, the stairs of a railway block, and traffic near the station when the long-distance trains come in.

Society and building rules
Railway quarters are the formal case. The railway's maintenance staff inspect the quarter, meter readings are noted, and the keys go back on the date the division gives, which decides when we load. For an independent house, the landlord's consent and paid-up bills are enough. The few apartment blocks ask for notice to the secretary and dues cleared. For a shop or small workshop in the old city, the stock is packed and listed apart from the household, since it travels with its own papers.

Where the truck can stand
The railway colonies and the outer colonies are straightforward, with room for a 17 ft truck near most doors. The old city is not. Lanes around Chandni Chowk, the sarafa and the old gates are narrow and crowded with two-wheelers and handcarts, and a truck cannot stop there once trade begins, so a pickup runs the goods out to wherever the truck is parked. Near Do Batti and Station Road the truck gets only a few minutes at the kerb.

Traffic and timing
The sarafa is at its busiest around Dhanteras and Diwali, on Akshaya Tritiya and through the wedding months, and the old city roads are hard to use from late morning in those weeks. Navratri garba and Ganesh processions fill the streets in the evenings. Otherwise traffic is heaviest around Do Batti and the station at train times and school hours. An early weekday start is the easiest time to move.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summers here are hot and dry, with May afternoons near 43°C, and the loading is done before midday. Ratlam's rains, late June to September, are moderate, but heavy spells leave water on the low roads near the station and in the old city for a few hours. Winter is mild and pleasant, and a date between November and February is the one to choose if you can.
