Shifting homes in Gandhinagar
Gandhinagar was planned in the 1960s as Gujarat's new capital, and the original city is a grid of thirty sectors. The roads between them carry letters of the Gujarati alphabet one way and numbers the other, so a junction is called Gh 4 or Ch 3. Inside the sectors are government quarters, bungalows on plots and a few low apartment blocks, all set among a great many trees.
Outside the grid, the city has grown along the road towards Ahmedabad. Kudasan, Sargasan, Raysan, Randesan and Koba are high-rise and mid-rise societies built for people who work in Gandhinagar or commute to Ahmedabad. GIFT City, by the Sabarmati, has office towers and a growing number of residential ones, with the tighter building management that comes with them.
The people moving here are mostly on postings: state government officers, Air Force staff at the South Western Air Command, bank and finance staff for GIFT City, and faculty and students at IIT Gandhinagar, PDEU, NFSU and GNLU. A government posting comes with quarters and a handover date, and a move out is usually a transfer with a joining date at the other end.

Inside Gandhinagar the drive is short and the roads are open. Sector 7 to Kudasan is about 8 km and Pethapur to GIFT City about 20, and even at the busiest time the grid does not jam the way Ahmedabad does. A 2 BHK is a one-day move. What adds hours is the paperwork: the quarters inspection before you leave, the lift slot in a tower, and the security check at GIFT City.

Society and building rules
Government quarters go back to the estate office, whose staff inspect the house and sign off before you leave, so the loading has to finish ahead of that visit. Private societies in Kudasan, Raysan and Sargasan want a written note, the truck number and a daytime slot, and some hold a deposit for the lift. GIFT City towers are the strictest, with gate entry recorded for each crew member. Tenants anywhere need the owner's approval in writing.

Where the truck can stand
Gandhinagar is built for traffic. Sector roads are wide, most quarters and bungalows have a drive or open ground in front, and a 17 ft truck can stand outside almost any gate without blocking anyone. The towers in the new areas have internal roads and a loading point. The exceptions are the older village lanes in Pethapur, Vavol and Randesan, and GIFT City, where the building decides where a truck may stop.

Traffic and timing
Traffic here is light by Gujarat standards, but it peaks on the Ahmedabad road at Sargasan, Infocity and the Koba circle as commuters head out each morning and back each evening. When the assembly is sitting, VIP movement holds traffic at the circles near the Sachivalaya, and during large events at Mahatma Mandir, such as the state's investment summit, some roads close for hours. We check the day's schedule before a move near the secretariat.

Weather and the months to plan around
Gandhinagar shares Ahmedabad's climate with a little more shade. May afternoons pass 44°C, so loading starts early and ends before the worst of the heat. The monsoon, late June to September, is moderate, and the wide sector roads drain quickly, though the road towards Ahmedabad slows badly in a heavy downpour. Winters are dry and clear, and a move is easiest between November and February.

I have to vacate government quarters in Sector 20. How do you plan around the handover?
Tell us the inspection date first. We pack the day before, load early on moving day and leave the quarters empty and swept for the estate office. For a transfer, the inventory and the invoice are drawn up in whatever format your department's claim asks for, and a long move carries a consignment number.
Do you move people into GIFT City towers?
Yes. The building management wants the crew names, their ID, the truck number and the time a day or two ahead, and books the service lift for a fixed slot. We send all of that once you share the contact, and plan the packing so the truck arrives inside the slot.
I'm a student at IIT Gandhinagar with some cartons and a bike. Can you move just that?
Yes. A few boxes, a study table and a bike make a small move. The bike rides on a carrier and reaches you separately. On a long route we can check whether a shared truck has room, which is cheaper, but a part load on a particular date cannot be promised.
Can we shift from Gandhinagar to Ahmedabad in a single day?
Yes. The two cities are about 30 km apart, so for a flat the packing, the drive and the unloading all fit in one day. Large trucks are barred from many Ahmedabad roads in daylight, so a big load goes in during the permitted hours or moves in a smaller vehicle. The Ahmedabad society's shifting hours settle the rest.
