Tirunelveli is two towns joined by bridges. On the west bank the old town grew around the Nellaiappar temple, with car streets wide enough for its huge chariot and narrower lanes behind them, lined with houses, halwa shops and textile stores. Across the river, Palayamkottai has the collectorate, the courts, the district offices and so many colleges that it has long been called the Oxford of South India. Newer colonies spread along the bypass: KTC Nagar, Perumalpuram, NGO Colony and Maharaja Nagar.
Homes here are mostly independent houses. Old-town houses are deep and narrow, with a front thinnai, tiled roofs and wooden pillars, and their families have usually lived there for generations. The Palayamkottai colonies have two storey houses with compounds, and apartment blocks are still few. Moves are simple in the colonies and slow in the old streets, where furniture sometimes has to be taken apart just to clear the front door.
Colleges and government set the rhythm. St Xavier's, St John's, Sarah Tucker, the medical college and Manonmaniam Sundaranar University bring students and teachers, and district postings bring officers on transfer. The ISRO Propulsion Complex at Mahendragiri, the Koodankulam nuclear plant and the wind farms to the south employ engineers, many of whom live in Palayamkottai. Young people leave for Chennai and Bangalore, and families go to Madurai, Thoothukudi or across the hills to Kerala.

The busy crossing of the bypass and the Tiruchendur road, with flats over shops. The truck cannot stand on the main road, so it loads from a side street.

Society and building rules
Most homes are independent houses, so the landlord, the final rent and the meter readings are what need settling before the truck comes. Apartment blocks in KTC Nagar and Perumalpuram want notice to the association and a daytime move. College and university quarters follow the academic calendar and are handed back after an inspection. Government quarters in Palayamkottai have their own clearance, and an officer on transfer is usually given a vacating date by the department, which then sets the loading day.

Where the truck can stand
The colonies across the river have wide roads, and a 17 ft lorry can stand beside most compound walls. The old town is mixed: the car streets themselves are wide, but the lanes off them are not, and some houses stand where only two-wheelers pass. There the truck waits on the car street, and goods are carried or brought out by a smaller vehicle. In Melapalayam the streets are tight and busy all day, and near the Junction a truck can only stand briefly.

Traffic and timing
The Aani car festival at the Nellaiappar temple, in June or July, closes the car streets when the chariot is drawn, and the days around it bring large crowds. Navaratri and Deepavali shopping fill the old town, and Christmas brings crowds around the Palayamkottai churches. Traffic is heaviest on the bridges, at Vannarpettai and near the Junction at school and office hours. In summer the working day starts early and breaks for the afternoon.

Weather and the months to plan around
Tirunelveli lies in the rain shadow of the Western Ghats. It gets little of the southwest monsoon, though strong winds blow through the passes from June to September, and most of its rain comes with the northeast monsoon from October to December. That rain can be severe: in December 2023 the Thamirabarani flooded large parts of the town. Summers are hot, with April and May near 39°C. January to March, dry and not yet at its hottest, is the easiest time to move.

Our house is in a lane behind the Nellaiappar temple car streets. Can you still move us?
Yes. The car streets themselves are wide, so the truck usually stands there at daybreak while the crew brings things out from the lane. Where a lane is long, a mini truck makes the trips. Old houses here have heavy wooden doors and narrow passages, so large pieces are opened up inside. Starting early keeps us clear of the shops and the temple crowds.
When should I keep my moving date away from the Aani festival?
In the days around the car festival, in June or July, when the great chariot of the Nellaiappar temple is drawn round the car streets. Those streets close on the main day and fill with people for several days either side. A move elsewhere in town, or in Palayamkottai, goes ahead normally. We check the year's dates at booking.
We are moving to Thiruvananthapuram. How does the drive go?
It is about 150 km south through Nagercoil, crossing into Kerala at Kaliyakkavilai, and takes four or five hours with a loaded truck. A household loaded in the morning reaches Thiruvananthapuram by the afternoon. Many homes there are on narrow, sloping lanes, so share the new address in advance and we will look at how close a truck can get.
Is the northeast monsoon a problem for a December move?
It can be. Most of Tirunelveli's rain falls between October and December, and a heavy spell can flood the low streets near the river, as it did in December 2023. We watch the forecast, seal cartons in plastic before the outer wrap, and load on a dry morning. If you have a free choice of date, January to March is easier.
