Trichy sits where the Kaveri divides, with Srirangam on the island between the Kaveri and the Kollidam. Around the Ranganathaswamy temple, concentric streets hold old agraharam houses with long, narrow rooms, a thinnai at the front and a courtyard inside. South of the river, the old town crowds around the Rockfort, with NSB Road, Big Bazaar Street and Chinthamani full of shops. Thillai Nagar, the Cantonment, KK Nagar and the newer layouts on the Madurai and Pudukkottai roads are planned, with independent houses and apartment blocks.
A good share of Trichy's housing belongs to employers. BHEL's township at Kailasapuram, the railway colony around the Golden Rock workshop at Ponmalai, and the ordnance and heavy alloy factories near Thiruverumbur each have quarters, handover rules and a steady turnover as staff transfer in and out. NIT at Thuvakudi, IIM, Bharathidasan University and colleges such as St Joseph's and National College add faculty and students. Srirangam is the part of the city that needs thought. Its streets are narrow, many houses share walls, and the inner streets fill with pilgrims, especially around Vaikunta Ekadasi in December or January. Society and building rules
Trichy has few gated societies. Apartment blocks in Thillai Nagar and KK Nagar ask for notice and cleared maintenance, and some check with the owner before a tenant's furniture goes out. For quarters, the process belongs to the employer. BHEL, the railways and the ordnance factories each inspect a house before taking it back, look at fittings and meter readings, and issue a clearance your office will need. We pack on the eve of that visit, leaving bare rooms for the inspector to walk through.

Where the truck can stand
Outside the old town and Srirangam, a 17 ft truck reaches most gates. Srirangam's streets are narrow and full of pilgrims and parked vehicles near the temple towers, so the lorry is parked out where the island's ring road opens up and the crew carries in stages. Below the Rockfort, NSB Road and the bazaar streets are too crowded for any truck once the shops open, and a mini truck works them early. Township roads are wide, though the gate may hold a vehicle until its pass is checked.

Traffic and timing
Vaikunta Ekadasi at Srirangam, in December or January, brings lakhs of pilgrims, and the roads onto the island are controlled for days around it. Aadi Perukku in July or August fills the river ghats, and the Samayapuram temple festival crowds the Chennai road north of the city. Day to day, the Chathiram and Central bus stands, Palakarai and the Kaveri bridge are the slow points. BHEL and the ordnance factories change shifts at fixed hours, and the Thanjavur road thickens then.

Weather and the months to plan around
Trichy has a long, hot summer. From April to June afternoons pass 40°C, and the dry wind makes loading in the middle of the day hard on people and on furniture. The crew starts at 6 am and plans for the truck to be closed before noon. Rain is modest and arrives mostly in October and November, when a single heavy night of the northeast monsoon can flood a few low streets. December to February is mild and dry, and those are the months to aim for.

I work at BHEL Trichy and have a transfer order. Can you fit the move to the township handover?
Yes. Share the vacating date and your reporting date at the new unit, and we plan the packing between them, with the house empty before the township inspection. Your claim will need an itemised inventory and a GST invoice, and both are made out the way your office asks. If a car or bike is going too, it travels on a carrier and arrives separately.
Can a truck reach our house inside Srirangam?
It depends on the street. The outer streets of the temple town take a mini truck, but the inner ones are narrow and full of pilgrims, stalls and parked two-wheelers, so a full-size lorry has to stay outside them. The crew carries in stages. Around Vaikunta Ekadasi the whole island is crowded, and we keep clear of those weeks.
Can we realistically move house in a Trichy May?
