Newer layouts and apartment blocks have come up at Kottiyam, Karikode and along the bypass.
Water is everywhere in Kollam. Ashtamudi Lake reaches into the city in long arms, and many houses sit on its banks or on narrow roads between the lake and the sea. Those roads are often a single lane with compound walls on both sides, and a large house by the backwater may be reached only by a lane a 14 ft truck will not enter. For such moves a smaller vehicle does the work in stages.
Work comes from the harbour, the minerals and the factories. The fishing harbours at Neendakara and Sakthikulangara are among the largest in Kerala, KMML and Indian Rare Earths at Chavara process the beach sand, and TKM College of Engineering, the medical colleges and the public sector units at Kundara bring engineers and teachers. Ashtamudi lakeside

Kollam has fewer apartment towers than Kochi, and most moves are from independent houses where the landlord or the family decides. Settle the final rent, the water and electricity readings and the handing over of keys before the truck arrives. The towers near Kottiyam and the bypass ask for the association to be told ahead, dues cleared and a daytime move. Harbour, KMML and railway quarters have their own vacating process, and loading is fitted around the inspection.

Where the truck can stand
NH 66 and the main city roads take a full-size lorry. The trouble is the lanes: in Thangassery, along the lake at Kureepuzha and Thevally, and in older parts of Kadappakada, they run between compound walls and some end at the water. A smaller vehicle handles those, sometimes in two or three trips. Around Chinnakada and the KSRTC stand a truck cannot stand after the morning. In the monsoon, lakeside lanes turn muddy and the carry slows.

Traffic and timing
Chinnakada, the KSRTC stand and the roads near the railway station are busy from 8 am, and NH 66 through Kollam is congested in both directions through the day. Kollam Pooram at the Asramam temple in April fills the Asramam grounds and nearby roads, and the Kottankulangara Chamayavilakku festival at Chavara in March blocks NH 66 there at night. Boat races on Ashtamudi and the Kallada river draw crowds to the shores. Weekday mornings are the quietest.

Weather and the months to plan around
Kollam is wet. From June to September the southwest monsoon pours down, and the low ground by the lake and the canals floods after a heavy night. Sea air and backwater keep humidity high all year, so wooden furniture and fabric are wrapped against damp and mattresses travel in covers. March to May is hot, near 34°C. From December to February the rain stops and moving is at its easiest.

The survey starts with a walk down the lane to measure its narrowest point and the gate. Heavy furniture is opened up inside, carried to a small vehicle at the widest spot in the lane, and taken in stages to the lorry on the road. In the monsoon the lane can be muddy, so we lay sheets and keep cartons off the ground.
Can you move us from Kollam to Thiruvananthapuram in one day?
Yes. It is about 70 km down NH 66, and a household that leaves after breakfast is being unpacked in Thiruvananthapuram by the afternoon. Many houses there sit on climbing lanes, so let us have the new address in good time to see whether the lorry reaches the gate or a smaller vehicle is needed.
We are moving to Tenkasi or Tirunelveli. Which road does the truck take?
Usually NH 744 through Punalur and the Aryankavu pass, which drops into Tamil Nadu at Sengottai. It is shorter than going round by Nagercoil, but the pass road has sharp bends and is slow in the monsoon, and the driver keeps to daylight on it. Tirunelveli is about 170 km that way.
I work at KMML in Chavara and our quarters must be handed back soon. Can you fit the move to that date?
