Shifting homes across Tamil Nadu
Chennai and its suburbs hold a large share of the state's jobs. IT companies line the Old Mahabalipuram Road and the Guindy and Porur corridors, car and electronics plants fill Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and the belt towards Tiruvallur, and the port, Ennore and Manali add heavy industry to the north. Its neighbourhoods run from old Mylapore, Triplicane and George Town to the newer towns of Tambaram, Perumbakkam and Siruseri.
The west of the state, the Kongu region, runs from Salem through Erode and Tiruppur to Coimbatore and lives on textiles, knitwear, pumps, motors and turmeric. Trichy has BHEL, the railway workshop at Golden Rock and NIT, and sits at the head of the Cauvery delta around Thanjavur. Madurai is the city of the south, with the Meenakshi temple at its centre, and Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi lie beyond it, with the port, salt pans and power plants. The Nilgiris are a hill district of their own, with Ooty, Coonoor and the Wellington cantonment.
Tamil Nadu is one of India's most urban states, and plenty of moves stay inside it. Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy send engineers to Chennai and Bengaluru, and a job back home often brings them back. Central government and defence staff come and go at Avadi, Tambaram, Trichy and Wellington, and students head to Vellore, Trichy and Chennai for college. Families also move for hospitals, with CMC Vellore and the big Chennai hospitals drawing patients who settle nearby for long treatment.

Homes and buildings
Chennai has more low-rise flats than most metros: blocks of four floors over stilt parking, many with a small lift or none, filling Anna Nagar, K K Nagar, Velachery and the suburbs. Gated towers stand along OMR, in Porur and near Tambaram, and Mylapore and T Nagar still have independent houses on narrow streets. Coimbatore and Madurai are mostly independent houses and small apartment buildings, with Madurai's old streets forming squares around the temple. The Chettinad towns near Karaikudi have huge old mansions, and Nilgiris homes sit on steep plots reached by steps.

Between cities
NH 44 runs down the middle of the state from Hosur and Krishnagiri through Salem, Namakkal, Karur and Madurai to Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari. NH 48 links Chennai with Vellore and Krishnagiri on the Bengaluru side, and NH 544 carries traffic from Salem past Erode to Coimbatore and on through the Palakkad gap at Walayar into Kerala. The GST Road runs south from Chennai through Chengalpattu towards Villupuram and Trichy, and the East Coast Road follows the shore to Puducherry. Most of the state is plain, so the slow parts are the city exits and the ghat roads up to the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal.

Moving into or out of Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu has no entry permit for household goods. A load of used belongings moves on a packing list, an inventory with values for insurance, and a signed declaration that the goods are personal effects, and no e-way bill is generated for them in the usual case. A vehicle kept in the state for over a year is registered afresh at a Tamil Nadu RTO against an NOC from the original one. The BH series plate is open to defence personnel, central and state government staff, PSU employees and staff of private firms with offices in four or more states or union territories.

Weather and the months to plan around
Heavy rain comes late in Tamil Nadu. The south-west monsoon largely passes it by, apart from the Nilgiris and the western edge, and it is the north-east monsoon, between October and December, that delivers the bulk of Chennai's rain, with flooding in low areas such as Velachery, Pallikaranai and parts of Tambaram, and cyclones on the coast. April to June is hot and humid, with Chennai and Vellore above 40°C. Pongal in mid-January empties Chennai as families go home, and Deepavali fills every road. January to March is usually the easiest time.

Should I avoid moving in Chennai between October and December?
If you can. The north-east monsoon brings spells of very heavy rain, and streets in Velachery, Pallikaranai, Mudichur and along parts of OMR may hold water for a day or longer after a downpour. If a joining letter fixes the date, keep a spare day, and mention at booking whether your street floods. Goods are not left overnight in stilt parking that takes water.
My Chennai flat is on the fourth floor with no lift. Is that a problem?
It is common here and it can be planned for. Beds and wardrobes are opened up inside the flat, enough people come to share the carrying on the stairs, and pieces that will not turn on a narrow landing are checked at the survey. Stairs add time, so a walk-up 2 BHK takes longer to load than one with a lift.
Is Pongal a bad time to move?
For a few days, yes. Chennai empties in the run-up to Pongal as people travel home to the south and west, the GST Road and the bus stands are jammed, and many workers are on leave until the festival is over. A move in the week before or the week after is easier to arrange, and roads are clear on the festival days themselves.
Can household goods go up to Ooty or Coonoor?
Yes. The ghat road from Mettupalayam climbs through hairpin bends and is slow for a loaded truck. Many hill homes are down narrow lanes or steps below the road, so a light vehicle often shuttles the goods down from the main road and heavy pieces are carried by hand. The Nilgiris are cool and damp for much of the year, so wood and upholstery are wrapped against moisture.
