Residents' associations are strong in Thiruvananthapuram and most colonies have one, though a house move needs little more than a word with the secretary. Towers in Kazhakootam and Pattom want a move-out request, maintenance settled, a lift slot and daytime hours. Government and ISRO quarters have their own procedure: an inspection, keys returned to the estate office and a clearance certificate, so the lorry is loaded before that. Anyone renting a private house should fix the handover with the owner, who may well be abroad, weeks ahead.

Where the truck can stand
MG Road, Kowdiar Road and the NH 66 bypass carry a full-size lorry without trouble. The lanes are the problem. Many houses sit on narrow, winding roads that climb, where a 17 ft truck cannot turn or pull a load uphill, and in Sasthamangalam, Vattiyoorkavu and Peroorkada the big vehicle often stops at the bottom while a smaller one goes up. Around East Fort and the temple, restrictions and crowds leave nowhere to stand. Kazhakootam's towers have compounds, and the bypass service road is the only other waiting spot.

Traffic and timing
Attukal Pongala in February or March is the day to avoid: lakhs of women set up hearths on the roads around Attukal, East Fort and much of the city, and traffic stops from the night before. The Padmanabhaswamy temple's Aarattu processions, twice a year, close the road to Shanghumugham beach and even the airport runway for a few hours. Onam week brings lights and crowds to Kowdiar and the museum, and a closing procession down MG Road. Otherwise, the Pattom, Kesavadasapuram, Ulloor and Kazhakootam junctions are slowest at office hours.

Weather and the months to plan around
Thiruvananthapuram gets both monsoons: the southwest rains from June to August, and a second wet spell with the northeast monsoon in October and November, when evening thunderstorms are common. Thampanoor and the streets along the Amayizhanjan canal waterlog in a heavy downpour. The air stays humid all year, and March to May is hot and sticky at about 34°C, so wood and upholstery are wrapped against damp. December to February is the driest, most comfortable time for a move.
