Shifting homes in Madurai
Madurai is built in squares around the Meenakshi Amman temple. The Chithirai, Avani Moola, Masi and Veli streets run in rings around it, lined with jewellery and textile shops, lodges and tall narrow houses where families live above the business. North of the Vaigai, Tallakulam, KK Nagar, Anna Nagar and Goripalayam were laid out later, mostly as independent houses, with flats now rising among them. To the south-west, SS Colony, Ponmeni and Thirunagar spread along the Bypass Road towards Thiruparankundram.
The two halves make for different moves. An old-city house is narrow and deep, with a steep stair, a room of steel trunks and a kitchen of heavy vessels, and no truck can stand outside it for long. A house in KK Nagar or Anna Nagar has a gate, a portico and often an upstairs portion let to tenants, and the truck backs up to the door. Newer flats near the Ring Road have lifts and associations, though there are still far fewer of them than in Chennai or Coimbatore.
Madurai is the business and medical centre of the southern districts. Aravind Eye Hospital, the Government Rajaji Hospital and the medical colleges draw doctors and staff, Madurai Kamaraj University and Thiagarajar College bring faculty and students, and the High Court bench brings lawyers and court staff. The TVS group began here and its companies still employ engineers in the city. Railway and bank transfers come through all year, and graduates leave for Chennai, Bangalore and Coimbatore.

Packers and movers charges in Madurai
Madurai is compact. KK Nagar to the old city is about 5 km, and Mattuthavani to Thirunagar, right across town, around 15 km. A 2 BHK is packed and delivered in a day, and in summer the day starts at dawn and pauses in the afternoon. Crossing the Vaigai is where the time goes: the bridges back up at office hours, and Simmakkal and Goripalayam can take half an hour to clear with a loaded truck. An old-city house with a long carry often needs the whole morning just to load.

The Masi and Veli streets
Jewellery, textile and hardware shops with families living above. A truck cannot stand in these streets after the shops open, so the loading is over by 8 am.
Anna Nagar and KK Nagar
Planned colonies north of the river, mostly houses with the odd block of flats. Wide streets, a gate at every house and short carries.
Tallakulam and Goripalayam
Older central areas near the courts, the offices and the Vaigai bridges. Goripalayam junction stays jammed from morning, so we reach it before the courts and offices open.
SS Colony and Ponmeni
Settled residential streets off the Bypass Road, with portions let to tenants and staircases up the outside wall. Parking is easy on most cross streets.
Thirunagar and Thiruparankundram
Houses on quiet roads to the south-west, with the temple hill close by. Festival days at the Murugan temple bring crowds and parked buses to the approach roads.
Mattuthavani and the Ring Road
Newer apartment blocks and layouts near the bus stand and the flower market, with lifts, association rules and easy access for a full-size truck.

Society and building rules
Few Madurai homes come with an association. In a rented house or portion the owner decides, and the conversation is about the final rent, the electricity reading and the date the keys go back. The newer apartment blocks near the Ring Road want notice, a daytime slot and the maintenance paid, and some ask a tenant for proof of the owner's consent. Bank, railway and university quarters are inspected before they are handed back, and we pack the day before that visit.

Where the truck can stand
The colonies north of the river and along the Bypass Road have room for a mid-size lorry right outside the house. The streets around the temple do not: they are narrow, one-way in places, crowded with two-wheelers, and some are closed to heavy vehicles during the day. There the truck waits on a wider road near the Periyar bus stand or the Veli streets, and a mini truck makes the trips. Around Simmakkal and the markets, handcarts and delivery vans leave little room, so loading there is planned for first light.

Traffic and timing
The Chithirai festival in April and May is Madurai's biggest event. For about two weeks the Masi streets carry the temple car, the celestial wedding draws huge crowds, and on the day Kallazhagar enters the Vaigai the river banks and bridges fill from before dawn. Keep a move near the centre or the river away from those days. The float festival at the Vandiyur Teppakulam in January or February fills the roads around it, and Jallikattu at Avaniyapuram blocks that side of town around Pongal.

Weather and the months to plan around
Madurai is hot for much of the year, and April to June is the hardest stretch, with afternoons near 40°C and dust in the air. The crew loads early, electronics stay in the shade, and a big house is often packed one evening and loaded the next morning. Rain is modest. The northeast monsoon in October and November brings the heaviest spells, which flood underpasses and some low streets for an hour or two. November to February, cooler and drier, is when a move goes easiest.

Madurai families move up the highway to Chennai for work, to Bangalore for IT jobs and to Coimbatore for business. We live on one of the Masi streets. Can we move during the Chithirai festival?
Better not. For about two weeks in April or May the Masi streets carry the temple car and the festival processions, and the crowds leave no room to park a vehicle or carry furniture out. The day Kallazhagar enters the Vaigai also fills the river bridges. Pick a date a week before or after, and book early, since those weeks also bring the summer transfers.
Our upstairs portion in KK Nagar has only an outside staircase. Can you bring a wardrobe down?
Yes. Outside staircases here are often steep and open on one side, so a wardrobe or a cot is taken apart on the landing and carried down in parts, with a person below each piece. If something will not turn at the bend, the survey shows it, and a rope lowering from the terrace is listed in the quote.
How soon can our household reach Chennai?
Chennai is about 460 km up the highway through Trichy. A household packed and loaded in the morning is usually delivered the next day. Many Chennai apartment blocks allow moves only in daytime and ask for a lift booking, so send us your new building's rules and we plan the drive to arrive within its hours. A car, if you have one, goes on a carrier of its own.
I work in the Madurai railway division and have been transferred. Can you work to the quarters handover?
Yes. Once the division gives you a vacating date, share it with us along with your joining date. Packing happens on the eve of the inspection, so the inspector finds nothing left inside. The claim file gets a full packing list and a GST invoice, and the consignment has a number you can track. A scooter or car follows on a carrier.
