Shifting homes in Leh
Leh sits at about 3,500 m in a cold desert, and the town has grown out from its old core below the palace and the Main Bazaar. The older houses are thick-walled mud brick on stone footings, with flat roofs of poplar beams, willow and packed earth, small windows and steep inner stairs. Newer homes in Changspa, Skara, Sankar and along the road to Choglamsar are concrete, often with a guesthouse wing let out in summer. Army and government housing takes up much of the land between the town and the airport.
Altitude changes the work. Carrying a wardrobe up a narrow stair takes more out of a crew at 3,500 m, so the day is paced slower and more hands are sent. The air is extremely dry, and solid wood brought up from a humid city can crack or open at the joints within a season. Water pipes freeze in winter, so fridges, washing machines and water purifiers are drained before they travel, and nothing holding water should cross a pass in an unheated truck.
Most people who move here are on posting. The army's 14 Corps has its headquarters in Leh, and its units, the air force station and the ITBP bring families who stay two or three years. Since Ladakh became a Union Territory, its administration has brought officers, teachers and doctors from other states. Hotels, guesthouses and travel agencies employ people through the summer. Ladakhi families send children to study in Jammu, Chandigarh and Delhi, and some keep a second home in the plains for the winter.

Packers and movers charges in Leh
Leh is small. The Main Bazaar to Changspa is under 2 km, and the town to Choglamsar about 8 km, so the driving inside Leh takes minutes, and in summer a whole house moves in a day. The altitude drags on the pace, and so do the steps in older houses, the narrow lanes near the bazaar and the tourist traffic from June to August. In winter the daylight is short, ice on the lanes makes every carry slippery, and a large house may need a second day.

Old town and Main Bazaar
Mud-brick houses on stepped lanes below the palace, and a market street kept largely free of vehicles. Goods go out by hand to a pickup at the edge.
Changspa
Guesthouses and family homes along the road to Shanti Stupa. The road is narrow and full of visitors in summer, and a small truck suits it.
Skara
Newer concrete houses in walled compounds on the south-western side of town, reached by lanes that are often unpaved and dusty.
Sankar
A quieter area north of the bazaar around the Sankar monastery, with family houses on narrow lanes that climb gently towards the hills.
Choglamsar
About 8 km south along the Indus on the Manali road, with the Tibetan settlement, colleges and newer houses. Wider roads and easier access.
Army and air force areas towards Spituk
Married quarters and messes on the airport side. The truck and crew need clearance at the gate, and the handover date sets the loading day.

Society and building rules
Most Leh homes are family houses, and the owner often lives on another floor or next door, so the move is settled with them directly, along with any water and electricity dues. Guesthouse rooms rented long term follow the owner's rules, and in summer an owner may want the room cleared for the season's guests. Army and air force quarters go back after an inspection, with passes for the crew and vehicle arranged ahead. UT government quarters have a similar handover through the department.

Where the truck can stand
The main roads in Leh take a truck, but many houses sit up narrow lanes between stone walls, with tight corners, and some are reached only on foot. Around the bazaar and the old town, vehicles are restricted, and goods reach the road by pickup or in the arms of the crew. The truck used for a long move waits on a wider road, such as Fort Road or the airport road, while goods are shuttled to it. In winter, ice on side lanes can stop a loaded vehicle altogether.

Traffic and timing
The road season sets the calendar. Zoji La on the Srinagar road usually opens in spring and stays open into early winter, and the Manali road over Baralacha La and Tanglang La opens later and closes earlier, with dates that shift with the snow every year. Army convoys have priority on both roads, and a landslide can hold traffic for a day. In town, June to August brings heavy tourist traffic, and the Ladakh Festival in September sends a procession through the bazaar. Plan a long move well inside the open months.

Weather and the months to plan around
Leh is dry and bright, with a strong sun even in winter. Summer days are around 25°C with cold nights, and the monsoon that soaks the rest of India barely arrives, though a sudden cloudburst can send mud across the roads. From November to March nights fall far below freezing, pipes freeze and the long roads close. Pack wood and leather for dryness, drain everything that holds water, and aim for the months between June and September, when both roads are most likely to be open.

Can you move my household to or from Leh in winter?
Not by road. Once the passes close, from around late autumn until spring, no truck can cross into Ladakh from Srinagar or Manali, and the dates change with the snow each year. A move inside Leh is still possible on a clear winter day. A long move should be booked well inside the open months, and we confirm the state of the road before the truck is loaded.
Which road will the truck take?
Whichever is open and suits the destination. The Srinagar road over Zoji La runs about 420 km to Srinagar and usually has the longer season. The Manali road over Baralacha La and Tanglang La is the direct way to Himachal, Chandigarh and Delhi, but it opens later and shuts earlier. If one road closes while a load is waiting, it can be sent by the other.
Will my furniture crack in the dry air?
Solid wood from a humid city can shrink and split at the joints, especially near a bukhari in a heated room. Keep such pieces away from the stove for the first weeks and let them settle slowly. Veneered and engineered furniture copes better. Because some stretches of the highway are rough, wooden pieces travel in bubble wrap with corrugated sheet over the edges.

Heavy items are packed for rough stretches, the fridge and washing machine are drained, and the claim is covered by a full goods list and a GST bill. Drivers and crew need time to adjust to the altitude, and the plan allows for it.
