Shifting homes in Salem
Salem grew as a crossroads, with NH 44 running to Bangalore, the roads to Coimbatore and Chennai, and a big railway junction at Suramangalam. The oldest parts, Shevapet, the Town area near the old bus stand and the streets towards the Kottai Mariamman temple, are crowded with wholesale shops and houses above them. Fairlands, Alagapuram, Hasthampatti and Swarnapuri are quieter and greener, with bungalows and newer houses, and apartment blocks have come up along the Omalur road and near the new bus stand.
The city's work is unusually varied. SAIL's steel plant, the magnesite mines, the sago factories that turn tapioca into javvarisi, handloom silk and cotton, and the workshops that make silver anklets all employ people here, along with a large lorry and transport trade. Periyar University and the city's medical and engineering colleges fill hostels and rented rooms. Staff at the railway division headquarters transfer in and out, and graduates leave for Bangalore and Chennai.
Houses here are solid and full. A Salem family home has a pooja room, a loft over the kitchen, steel almirahs and a terrace with water tanks and stored things, and the packing takes longer than the loading. Moves up to Yercaud, about 30 km away at the top of twenty hairpin bends, are their own job: the truck is chosen for the ghat, and bulky pieces are wrapped for the climb.

Salem is compact. Fairlands to Shevapet is about 5 km, and Suramangalam to Kondalampatti roughly 10 km, so a 2 BHK is packed and moved the same day. The slow parts are Five Roads and the new bus stand when offices open and close, the Shevapet lanes where goods go out on a smaller vehicle, and a large house where the loft and terrace take hours to clear. A house in Yercaud is a separate case, since the ghat climb adds time in each direction.

Society and building rules
Salem is mostly independent houses, and the landlord, often living downstairs or next door, is the one to square things with. Agree the date, read the meters, and settle the final rent and any painting before the truck arrives. The few apartment blocks near the new bus stand and on the Omalur road want notice and a daytime move. Railway, steel plant and bank quarters are handed back after an inspection that checks fittings and dues, and the loading date is set by it.

Where the truck can stand
Fairlands, Alagapuram, Hasthampatti and the bypass layouts take a 17 ft truck to the gate. Shevapet, the Town area and the lanes near the Kottai Mariamman temple are narrow and blocked by lorries loading and unloading goods through the day, so a mini truck ferries the load to the main road. On the Yercaud ghat road a long vehicle struggles at the hairpins with a full load, and we send a smaller truck, in two trips if needed.

Traffic and timing
Five Roads, the new bus stand, the Omalur road and Four Roads are the slow points, especially around 9 am and after 5 pm. The Aadi festival at the Kottai Mariamman temple in July or August brings crowds and processions to the old town, and Vinayagar Chathurthi processions close central roads for an evening. From April to June the mornings are the only comfortable working hours. A weekday outside festival weeks is the simplest day to move.

Weather and the months to plan around
Heat is the main thing to plan for in Salem, with April and May afternoons near 38°C. The crew starts at dawn and keeps electronics indoors until the truck is ready. Rain comes in two rounds, a little from June to September and a heavier share once the northeast monsoon arrives in October, and a heavy shower can flood the low roads for a while. Yercaud is cooler and wetter, and its ghat road is slow in the rains. December to February is the comfortable window for a move.

Can you move a household up to Yercaud?
Yes. The ghat road climbs through twenty hairpin bends, and a long truck struggles on them with a full load, so we send a smaller one, making two trips if needed. Bulky furniture is wrapped for the climb, and the drive is done in daylight. Yercaud is damp and misty for much of the year, so the packing includes a moisture layer.
Can a truck get into the lanes of Shevapet?
Not a full-size one during the day. Shevapet's streets are narrow and taken up by wholesale shops, goods lorries and handcarts from early morning. We leave the big truck where the road opens out and run a mini truck to and fro, with the crew carrying down the stairs. Starting at 6 am, a 2 BHK is usually out before trading begins.
My new job is in Bangalore. How quickly can the goods follow?
Bangalore is about 200 km up NH 44 through Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Hosur, a drive of four or five hours. Load in the morning and the goods can be in the new flat that evening, if the building accepts evening moves, or first thing the next day. Bangalore associations usually fix move-in hours and want notice, so send us their rules when you book.
I work at the steel plant and live in company quarters. Can you move us around the handover?
Yes. Once the township office gives the vacating date, we pack and load before it, so the inspection finds empty rooms.
