Erode makes its living from trade. It holds one of the country's biggest turmeric markets, its powerlooms and handlooms supply cloth wholesalers across the south, and buyers from Kerala and Karnataka fill its textile markets. The old town between the railway junction and the Kaveri is full of godowns, cloth shops and houses above them, packed along Brough Road, Mettur Road and the streets off Panneerselvam Park.
Around that core, Periyar Nagar, Sampath Nagar, Thindal, Surampatti and the Perundurai road have independent houses on quiet streets, with the odd apartment block. The railway has a large colony near the junction, and the SIPCOT estate at Perundurai, Kongu Engineering College and the medical college there have added houses and rented rooms to the west. The railway colony

The old town is harder: Brough Road and the streets around Panneerselvam Park are busy from mid morning, and the cloth market lanes are full of goods autos, bales and handcarts. A mini truck shuttles the load out to wherever the lorry can stand. Houses in Surampatti and parts of Karungalpalayam sit on narrow streets where parked two-wheelers leave little room, and the heavier pieces are walked to the vehicle by hand.

Traffic and timing
Market days decide the old town. When the cloth markets and the turmeric auctions are running, the streets around them fill with lorries and buyers from early morning, so a move there goes on a quieter weekday. The Periya Mariamman temple festival in March or April brings crowds and processions into the centre. Traffic is otherwise moderate, building near the bus stand and Panneerselvam Park at school and office hours. In summer, work starts at 6 am.

Erode stays dry and warm through most of the year, and from March to May the afternoons reach about 38°C. Loading is done in the early morning, and fabric-covered furniture and electronics are kept out of the sun. Rain is light, coming mostly from October to December, though a heavy spell can flood low streets. In a year when heavy water is released from Mettur, the houses along the Kaveri bank are the ones at risk. The months from November to February make a move simplest.

The Salem route on NH 44 is longer but open round the clock, so the delivery time we give you is one we can plan properly.
Can you move us across the Kaveri to Pallipalayam or Komarapalayam?
Yes, and it counts as a local move. Pallipalayam is just across the bridge and Komarapalayam a little further, so a two bedroom home crosses over in a single day. The only real delay is the Kaveri bridge in the evening, when traffic between the towns builds, so we try to cross before 4 pm.
