Two institutions shape Vellore. CMC, the Christian Medical College hospital on Ida Scudder Road, draws patients from across India, especially from West Bengal, the Northeast and Jharkhand, and many of their families rent rooms or flats nearby for months of treatment. Across the Palar in Katpadi, VIT brings students and faculty from every state, and a ring of hostels, flats and paying guest houses has grown up around its campus.
The old town sits around the fort and the Jalakandeswarar temple, with Long Bazaar, Main Bazaar and the lanes near the Chittoor bus stand crowded with shops and old houses. Sathuvachari, Thottapalayam, Kagithapattarai and Gandhi Nagar in Katpadi have independent houses, rented portions and small apartment blocks, and CMC's staff live around Bagayam and in the hospital's own quarters. BHEL at Ranipet and the leather units around Ambur and Vaniyambadi bring industrial families to the wider district.
Many Vellore moves are small and short. A patient's family leaving after treatment, a student finishing at VIT or a nurse taking a new posting has a room's worth of things, often going a long way, to Kolkata, Guwahati or Kerala. Family houses in Sathuvachari and Katpadi are fuller, with steel almirahs and wooden cots. Packers and movers charges in Vellore
Vellore is small. The CMC area to Katpadi is about 6 km across the Palar, and Bagayam to Sathuvachari around 8 km, which makes a two bedroom move a one-day affair. The delays come from the traffic around CMC, which rarely eases, the Palar bridge on the Katpadi road at college hours, and the heat, which in May cuts the useful working day to the morning and early evening. A single room near CMC or VIT moves in a couple of hours.

Lodges, rented rooms and flats within walking distance of the hospital. The road is packed with patients, autos and ambulances, so a truck loads only at dawn.
Long Bazaar and the fort area
Old shopping streets and houses around the fort moat. The lanes take a mini truck at most, and the shops are open by 9 am.
Katpadi and Gandhi Nagar
Houses, flats and student rooms north of the Palar, near VIT and Katpadi Junction. Wide roads, with heavy two-wheeler traffic at college hours.
Sathuvachari
Independent houses and newer apartment blocks along the highway on the eastern side. Easy truck access from the service road.
Thottapalayam and Kagithapattarai
Dense older neighbourhoods with narrow streets and portions let to tenants. A 14 ft truck reaches some doors, and a smaller vehicle the rest.

CMC's medical college campus and staff housing on the road south, with hostels and quarters that follow the college's vacating dates.

Society and building rules
Rooms and flats near CMC are usually let by the month to patients' families, and landlords want the room emptied and keys returned on the agreed day, with the deposit settled after a quick check. Flats and PG houses around VIT work the same way, and their moves bunch at the end of semesters. The few apartment blocks want notice and a daytime move. CMC and VIT staff quarters, and BHEL's at Ranipet, go back after an inspection, and loading is fixed for the day before.

Where the truck can stand
Katpadi, Sathuvachari and Bagayam take a full-size truck on most streets. Ida Scudder Road and the lanes around CMC are another matter: autos, ambulances and pedestrians fill them from early morning, and a truck cannot stand there for long once the day starts. Long Bazaar and the streets round the fort are narrow and one-way in places, so a mini truck brings the goods out. Around VIT, parked two-wheelers line the side streets, and a truck may have to wait at the corner.

Traffic and timing
The hours around CMC's outpatient opening are the worst on Ida Scudder Road, and the Katpadi road backs up with VIT traffic at the start and end of the college day. The bus stands are slow in the evenings, and weekends at the Sripuram golden temple fill the road south. In May the day starts at 6 am, breaks by noon and resumes after 4 pm. Semester ends at VIT and course ends at CMC fill the calendar, so book early for those weeks.

Weather and the months to plan around
Vellore is among the hottest places in Tamil Nadu. May afternoons often cross 40°C, and the crew works only in the cool hours, keeping electronics and polished wood inside until the truck is ready to take them. Rain comes mainly from September to December, and a heavy spell floods low streets and underpasses for a while. The Palar is dry for most of the year. December to February brings cool, dry days, and those are the months to pick.

My family came to Vellore for treatment at CMC, and we are going home to Kolkata. Can you move our things?
Yes. A few months of living here usually fills a room or a small flat: a cot, a gas stove, utensils, clothes and some cartons. That is quick to pack, and for a run as long as Kolkata we check whether it can go as a part load with other goods heading east, which costs less but is never certain. Otherwise it goes in its own vehicle. Give us your discharge date and we plan around it.
Can a truck reach a house near the fort or Long Bazaar?
Not a big one. The streets there are narrow, some are one-way, and the shops fill them from mid morning. The big truck stays on a broader street and a mini truck works the lane while the crew brings goods from your door. Loading starts at first light, and a 2 BHK is usually done before the bazaar gets busy.
How do you handle a move in May, when it is so hot?
By working the cool hours. The crew arrives at 6 am, clears the sunny rooms first and closes the truck before noon, and if needed comes back after 4 pm to finish. Electronics, polished wood and glued or veneered furniture stay indoors until they go straight into the truck. On a long move, the driver covers the most ground early and late in the day.
Can you move us from Katpadi to Bangalore or Chennai in one day?
Usually, yes. Chennai is about 140 km and Bangalore about 210 km, both on NH 48, so goods loaded after breakfast can be in the new home before night. The catch is the building at the other end: associations in both cities fix move-in hours and need notice, so tell us the new building's rules and we time the drive to them.
