Shifting homes across Ladakh
Ladakh is a high, cold desert beyond the Great Himalaya, and Leh, its main town, sits at about 3,500 m. Two roads connect it to the rest of India by land. One comes from Srinagar through Sonamarg, over Zoji La to Drass and Kargil, and on to Leh. The other comes from Manali through the Atal Tunnel and over Baralacha La and Tanglang La, both far higher. Both close for the winter, and everything that reaches Leh by road in a year comes while they are open.
The road season decides whether a move can happen at all. The Srinagar road over Zoji La reopens in spring, once the Border Roads Organisation has cleared the snow, and stays open until heavy snow closes it again, often in December or January. The Manali road, with its higher passes, has a shorter season, generally from late May or June to October or November. In the depth of winter, roughly January to March, neither is open and no household goods reach or leave Leh by road. The dates shift every year with the snow.
A large share of moves into Ladakh are postings. The army has its corps headquarters and many units in and around Leh, the ITBP and other forces are spread along the border, and since Ladakh became a union territory in 2019 its administration has brought officers and staff from across India. Doctors, teachers and bank staff follow, as do hotel and travel workers for the summer. Moves out are just as tied to the calendar, since anyone leaving after the passes close has to wait for spring.

Homes and buildings
Traditional Ladakhi houses are built of sun-dried mud brick on stone foundations, with thick walls, small windows, flat roofs laid on poplar and willow, and steep, narrow stairs. Newer homes and guesthouses in Leh, in areas like Changspa, Skara and Sankar, are concrete, usually two or three floors, with more room to work. Army and government quarters are in planned colonies. Every house is built for the cold, with heaters, water tanks and fuel that have to be dealt with before a move, and pipes that freeze in winter.

Between cities
Srinagar to Leh is a little over 400 km, and Manali to Leh about the same, and either takes two days or more for a truck, with night halts at Kargil on one road and around Keylong or Sarchu on the other. The Manali road climbs above 5,000 m at Tanglang La, and Zoji La and parts of the Manali road are rough and unpaved, with water crossings after snowmelt and one-lane stretches where traffic waits. Loaded vehicles lose power at altitude and crawl on the climbs. Within Ladakh, Leh to Kargil is about 220 km, and the roads to Nubra and Pangong cross passes of their own.

Moving into or out of Ladakh
Household goods going to Ladakh travel like any other personal move, with an inventory and your declaration that they are your own used belongings, and normally no e-way bill. An Indian citizen needs no permit for Leh town. Visitor permits and registration for some areas nearer the border have changed more than once in recent years, so check the current rule with the Ladakh administration before planning a move there. A car kept in Ladakh past 12 months should be re-registered with an LA number once its previous RTO has issued an NOC, and those who qualify can use BH plates instead. Prepaid numbers from other states do not work in Ladakh.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summer in Leh is short, dry and bright, with days around 25°C and cold nights, and it is also the tourist season, when roads and hotels are busiest. Snow can fall on the passes in any month, and a fresh fall in June or September can hold vehicles for a day or two. Winter is severe, with Leh nights far below freezing and Drass colder still, and the roads are shut. For a move in, June to September is the most dependable stretch. For a move out, aim to finish by early October, before the first heavy snow.

Can we move our household to Leh in winter?
Not by road. In the depth of winter, roughly January to March, both roads are closed, and the Manali road stays shut for months longer than that. Flights to Leh keep running, so a family posted in winter can fly in with what it needs for the first months and have the household follow once the road reopens. We confirm the road position before fixing any date.
Which road will our goods take to Leh?
Whichever is open and makes sense for where the load starts. From Jammu, Punjab or Delhi, the Srinagar road over Zoji La has the longer season and is the one used early in spring and late in autumn. The Manali road is shorter for loads from Himachal and Chandigarh, but only in its own window, roughly June to October. Both take two days or more with night halts, and you get a range of delivery dates.
Does the altitude affect the move?
It affects people more than goods. Leh is at about 3,500 m, and anyone flying in is advised to rest for the first day or two before carrying anything heavy, so plan the unpacking with that in mind. Drivers on the road climb gradually over two days, which helps. Sealed bottles and some packaged liquids can leak as pressure changes on the passes, so those are packed upright and bagged.
When is the last safe time to move out of Leh before winter?
Plan for the truck to leave by early October. The Manali road usually closes first, often in October or early November, and the Srinagar road can stay open later, but an early snowfall on either can close it with little warning. Packing in September leaves a margin for bad weather. If the window is missed, the household stays in Leh until the road reopens in spring.
