Shifting homes in Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer is one of the few places where people still live inside a fort. Sonar Qila's yellow sandstone walls hold homes, temples, guest houses and shops, reached by a steep, winding ramp through a series of gates. Below it the old city spreads out in lanes of carved havelis, such as Patwon ki Haveli, down towards Gadisar lake. The newer town has grown around Hanuman Chowraha and along the roads to Barmer, Jodhpur and Sam, with the defence areas beyond.
Inside the fort and the old city, a move is almost all carrying. The ramp and the lanes take people on foot, two-wheelers and autos, and a truck stops well outside, so the crew brings everything down by hand or on a small carrier. Old houses have narrow stone stairs and low doorways, and furniture often has to come apart to pass. In the new town it is ordinary work, with a truck at the gate and fine sand to keep out of every carton.
Many of the people who move in and out of Jaisalmer are posted here, to the army's military station, the air force station or the BSF, which guards the border to the west. Wind and solar parks and the gas fields bring engineers from energy companies, and hotels, resorts and desert camps employ staff through the tourist season. Jaisalmer's town is small, and moves within it are a few kilometres, from the old city to the newer colonies around Hanuman Chowraha or out to the military station. A 2 BHK in the new town takes a day. A house in the fort takes longer, because every carton and piece of furniture comes down the ramp by hand. A move to or from a resort on the Sam road adds about 40 km each way.

Sonar Qila (the fort)
Homes inside the walls are reached by a steep ramp through four gates. No truck goes up, so everything is carried down to a vehicle below.
Old city havelis below the fort
Narrow lanes around Patwon ki Haveli and the bazaars, crowded with visitors from mid-morning. A small carrier brings goods to the truck on the main road.
Hanuman Chowraha and the new town
Newer houses and shops on wider roads. The truck gets right to the door, and the carry from the house is short.
Military and air force stations
Defence housing outside the town, with entry passes for the vehicle and crew arranged through the unit before the date.
Sam Road and the hotel belt
Resorts and staff housing towards the dunes on long, open roads. Sand drifts on the road edges, and the round trip takes time.

Society and building rules
Jaisalmer has no big societies. Rented houses mean a landlord to settle with: rent, bills, a meter reading and the keys. Homes inside the fort share stairs and lanes with their neighbours, so agree with them when the crew will be carrying. Defence quarters have a vacating date and procedure, and the station needs the vehicle and crew details for entry. Staff housing at a hotel is handled through the property's manager, who sets the hours around the guests.

Where the truck can stand
The ramp up to the fort is steep, worn smooth and too narrow for a truck, and its gates turn sharply, so the truck waits below near Gopa Chowk and goods come down by hand or on a small carrier. The old city lanes below are a little wider but crowded with visitors from mid-morning. In the new town and the defence areas there is space to park at the door, and sand on the road edges is the only nuisance.

Traffic and timing
Tourist season, October to March, fills the fort, the old city and the road to Sam, and the Desert Festival in February closes streets for its parades. From April to June the day's work has to be done by late morning, before the heat and the afternoon sandstorms. Heavy vehicles are kept away from the old city through the day, and an early start suits every season here.

Weather and the months to plan around
Jaisalmer is hotter and drier than almost anywhere else in India. The May and June heat touches 48°C on the worst afternoons, and hot winds lift sand that gets into anything not sealed, so cartons are taped on every seam and furniture is stretch wrapped. Rain is scarce, a few showers in July and August. Winter days are pleasant and nights can fall to a few degrees, which makes November to February the season to move, allowing for tourist crowds.

I live inside Jaisalmer Fort. How do you get my things out?
By hand, mostly. The truck stands below near Gopa Chowk, and the crew carries cartons and furniture down the ramp or uses a small carrier where the lane allows. Big pieces come apart in the house. Before quoting, we walk the route on a video call and count the steps, send enough people for it, and start early before visitors fill the fort.
Can you move my car along with the household to my next posting?
Yes. The car goes on a carrier and reaches your new station separately from the household, so the two may not arrive on the same day. Both appear on the inventory and the GST invoice, laid out as your unit's claim section asks, and the household load travels under its own consignment number.
What time of year suits a move in Jaisalmer?
November to February, when the days are mild and the sand stays down. Those are also the tourist months, so a move inside the fort or the old city is done early, before the visitors arrive. From April to June we pack and load at dawn and stop by late morning, and the monsoon here is too thin to matter.
Our next home is in Jodhpur. Is that a one-day move?
Usually, yes. Jodhpur is about 290 km through Pokaran, a long day for a loaded truck. Packing takes the morning, the drive takes the afternoon, and the unloading happens that evening or early the next day. In summer we start at first light to keep the loading out of the heat.
