Inside, the lanes around Kote Gate and the Rampuria havelis are too narrow and too crowded for anything bigger than a tempo, and patas and parked two-wheelers take more of the width. The truck waits outside the gate and the goods come out in trips. Defence areas have wide roads once the gate has cleared the vehicle.

Traffic and timing
Level crossings cut through the middle of Bikaner, the one at Kote Gate among them, and they close for every train, which can hold a truck for a while, so we plan the route around them. KEM Road and the walled city bazaars are at their most crowded from late morning into the evening. The Camel Festival in January brings visitors and closed roads around its venues for a couple of days. Summer loading happens early, before the heat and the afternoon wind.

How do you keep dust and sand out of the load?
Every carton is taped along all its seams, mattresses and sofas go into plastic covers, and furniture is wrapped in stretch film over the padding. Televisions and appliances are packed with plastic around the vents. If a dust storm is building, we stop carrying and keep the truck shut until it passes, then carry on.
Can a truck reach a haveli in the old city?
Rarely right to the door. The truck waits at the nearest gate or a wide road, and the goods reach it by tempo or handcart through the lanes. Big almirahs and beds come apart upstairs where they can. We look at the route first, including the stairs and any patas outside, and the carry goes into the quote.
My daughter is joining coaching in Sikar. Can you move her things and ours?
Yes. Sikar is about 220 km on the road through Sri Dungargarh and Ratangarh, so a house loaded in the morning is emptied in Sikar by evening. If you are renting a flat there for the course, we can move a full kitchen and beds with her study things, and bring them back to Bikaner when the course ends.
