Shifting homes in Kharagpur
Kharagpur is built around two big institutions. The railway settlement, laid out by the Bengal Nagpur Railway, is a spread of old quarters and bungalows with verandahs, high ceilings and large compounds, many still home to Telugu families whose grandparents came to work in the workshops. The IIT campus is a town of its own, with faculty and staff quarters and halls of residence. Around both is the ordinary town of Gole Bazar, Malancha, Inda and Prembazar, with houses, small apartment blocks and rented rooms.
A move out of a railway quarter or a campus home runs to someone else's calendar. Railway quarters are vacated by the date on the transfer and handed back after an inspection, and IIT homes and hall rooms follow the institute's rules and semesters. Old railway bungalows hold more than they seem to, with heavy wooden furniture and store rooms, and the older campus blocks are walk-ups. In town, lanes around Gole Bazar are tight, and the newer flats in Malancha and Inda are the easy ones.
The railway workshop, the loco sheds and the Kharagpur division bring railway families, IIT Kharagpur brings faculty, staff and a large student body, and the Kalaikunda air force station brings service families. Industrial units along NH 16 add a few more. People leave on transfer, at the end of a degree or on retirement, often to Kolkata, or to Visakhapatnam and the Telugu cities further south.

Nothing inside Kharagpur is far. The railway settlement to Malancha is about 5 km, and the IIT campus to Inda about the same, so a 2 BHK rarely runs past one day. A large railway bungalow, or a campus home with years of books, can take two days to pack. The slow points are the crossings and bridges over the railway lines that divide the town, Gole Bazar in the middle of the day, and the gate formalities at the campus and at Kalaikunda.

The main market, crowded from morning with shops, rickshaws and totos. The truck stays on the outer road and a small vehicle comes in.
Malancha and Inda
Newer houses and apartment blocks on roads wide enough for a full truck. The easiest part of town to load or unload in.
Kalaikunda
Air force station quarters outside the town, where civilian vehicles need a pass and the posting decides the date.

Society and building rules
Railway quarters are vacated to the date on the order, and the inspection before handover checks fittings, keys and dues, so where possible the packing finishes a day early. The IIT has its own procedure for vacating quarters and hall rooms, and campus security asks for the truck number and crew names beforehand. Private buildings in Malancha, Inda and around Prembazar are smaller and less formal, but the owner or the society should know the date, and a tenant should settle the last month's rent and electricity first.

Where the truck can stand
The railway settlement and the IIT campus are generous with space, with wide roads, compounds and room for a full truck beside the block. Town is harder. Around Gole Bazar and the older lanes off it, the truck parks out where the road widens, and a smaller vehicle, or a hand trolley, covers the rest. In Prembazar the road is narrow and lined with shops, so we load from the nearest point that does not block traffic.

Traffic and timing
Kharagpur's traffic is lighter than a city's, but it has its own knots. The roads over the railway lines and around Gole Bazar slow down in the middle of the day, and NH 16 is heavy with trucks through the night. At the IIT, the end of the spring semester in late April and May and the start of the autumn one in July are when campus moves pile up. Durga Puja crowds the town for a week, and we plan around it.

Weather and the months to plan around
Kharagpur is close enough to the coast to get the Bay's humidity and, in some years, its cyclones, usually in May or in October and November. Summer runs from April to June at 38°C to 40°C with heavy air, and late afternoon storms are common in April and May. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain, and low roads waterlog after a downpour. In the wet months we double-wrap wooden furniture and mattresses. November to February is dry and comfortable.

It is about 130 km on NH 16, a few hours of driving, so a home packed before noon can usually be emptied into the new one that evening, though Kolkata's daytime limits on goods vehicles sometimes push delivery to the next morning. Does the monsoon or a cyclone warning affect a move here?
It can. Heavy rain slows the loading and floods low roads for a few hours, so we pack with an extra plastic layer and keep tarpaulins ready. When a cyclone warning is out for the coast, we move the date instead of loading into it, because the wind and rain reach Kharagpur too.
